How to Beat Messmer the Impaler in Elden Ring
Updated April 2026 · 4 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
Stay close and aggressive — Messmer’s spear combos have large gaps at melee range that his snakes fill less effectively than his spear. In Phase 2 he transforms into a serpent — dodge his fire breath by rolling through it toward him, not away. Use Black Knife Tiche or Mimic Tear as your spirit and bring Fire resistance talismans.
How to Beat Messmer the Impaler
1
Where to find Messmer. Messmer the Impaler is the main required boss of the Shadow Keep — a large fortress in the central Realm of Shadow. Access Shadow Keep from the Scadu Altus plateau after progressing through the DLC’s opening areas. Messmer is found deep within Shadow Keep after navigating its multi-floor interior. He is the DLC’s primary gating boss — defeating him is required to access the final areas.
2
Phase 1 — stay inside his spear reach. Messmer fights with a long spear and fire magic. His primary weakness is close range — most of his spear thrust combos pass over a player hugging his body. Dodge through his thrusts toward him to close distance, then attack his flanks during his recovery frames. Never back away from his thrusts — rolling backward keeps you in the hitbox path for his full combo duration.
3
Watch for the snake impale — his deadliest Phase 1 attack. Messmer summons a giant snake from below that erupts upward — massive AoE with fire damage. The telegraph is Messmer raising his arms dramatically and the ground glowing beneath you. Sprint away immediately when you see this wind-up — the snake’s eruption has an enormous radius that cannot be dodged by rolling. Sprint at least 8–10 blocks away and wait for the animation to complete before returning.
4
Phase 2 — he merges with a serpent. Around 50% HP Messmer is consumed by a giant fire serpent and emerges merged with it — significantly larger and more aggressive. His moveset gains serpent bite attacks and sustained fire breath streams. The key change: roll through his fire breath toward him rather than away — the fire stream tracks your position and rolling backward keeps you in it, while rolling through it exits the hitbox completely.
5
Attack during his Phase 2 slam recovery. In Phase 2 Messmer frequently slams both arms into the ground creating a fire shockwave — after the shockwave clears (about 1.5 seconds) he has a 2–3 second recovery window. Sprint in during this window and land 2–3 hits before he recovers. This is the most consistent Phase 2 damage window. Avoid being greedy — 2 clean hits per window beats 4 hits with a punishing counter-attack.
Messmer Tips
→
Maximum Scadutree Blessings are essential: Messmer hits extremely hard at low Blessing levels — explore the Realm of Shadow thoroughly before attempting him. With 10+ Scadutree Blessings his attacks become survivable and your damage output becomes meaningful. Attempting him with 3–4 Blessings makes the fight feel nearly impossible regardless of skill level.
→
Fire resistance talismans significantly help: Messmer deals almost exclusively Fire damage. Equip the Pearldrake Talisman +2 and Flamedrake Talisman +2 (found in the DLC) for substantial fire damage reduction. The difference between 20% and 55% fire resistance in Phase 2 is often the difference between surviving his fire breath and dying in it — invest in fire mitigation before the fight.
→
Black Knife Tiche survives Phase 2 best: Black Knife Tiche’s extreme mobility lets her dodge Messmer’s Phase 2 fire attacks that instantly kill most other spirits. She deals consistent damage throughout both phases and her teleporting playstyle avoids the large AoE attacks. Mimic Tear also works well but dies more frequently in Phase 2 fire streams.
→
Lightning and bleed are most effective: Messmer has high Fire resistance (fighting fire with fire is ineffective) but moderate Lightning and bleed vulnerability. Rivers of Blood procs Hemorrhage efficiently against him, and Lightning-infused weapons deal solid damage throughout both phases. Avoid Holy weapons — Shadow of the Erdtree enemies generally resist Holy damage.
→
He drops the Remembrance of the Impaler: Messmer’s Remembrance transposes at Enia into either the Spear of the Impaler (a powerful fire spear with Messmer’s own moveset as its Weapon Art) or the Messmer’s Orb incantation (launches fire serpent orbs). Both are among the DLC’s strongest weapon and spell options respectively — worth farming two playthroughs if you want both.
FAQ
Where is Messmer the Impaler in Elden Ring?
Messmer is the main boss of Shadow Keep — a large fortress in the Scadu Altus area of the Realm of Shadow (Shadow of the Erdtree DLC). Progress through the DLC’s opening Gravesite Plain area into Scadu Altus, then navigate Shadow Keep’s interior to reach Messmer’s fog gate. He is a required boss gating access to the DLC’s final areas.
How do you dodge Messmer’s fire breath in Phase 2?
Roll through the fire breath toward Messmer rather than away from it. The fire stream tracks your position as you move backward, keeping you inside the hitbox for the full duration. Rolling into the breath and through it exits the hitbox entirely. This counterintuitive roll direction is the key Phase 2 technique — once internalised, Messmer’s fire breath becomes manageable.
Is Messmer required in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree?
Yes — Messmer the Impaler is a required boss in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Defeating him is necessary to access the final areas of the Realm of Shadow including the path to Promised Consort Radahn. He cannot be skipped or bypassed in the main DLC progression.
What is Messmer weak to in Elden Ring?
Messmer has moderate vulnerability to Lightning damage and bleed buildup. He has high Fire resistance — fire weapons and spells are ineffective against him. Rivers of Blood katana procs Hemorrhage efficiently and Lightning-infused weapons deal solid damage throughout both phases. Avoid Holy damage as most Shadow of the Erdtree enemies resist it.
