How to Make a Workbench — Step by Step
Chop down a tree to get Wood
Punch a tree with your bare hands or use your starting Copper Axe if you have one. Each tree drops between 10 and 20 Wood depending on its size. You only need 10 Wood total, so a single medium tree is enough. Any wood type works — normal Wood from surface trees is the easiest to grab on day one.

Press Esc (PC) or the inventory button on console to open your inventory screen. On the left side you will see a small crafting panel showing everything you can currently craft by hand. The Work Bench should appear here as soon as you have 10 Wood in your inventory.

Scroll down the crafting list on the left until you see Work Bench. Click it once (or press the confirm button on console) to craft it. It will appear directly in your inventory. The crafting happens instantly and costs exactly 10 Wood.
Place the Work Bench
Move the Work Bench from your inventory to your hotbar, then select it and right-click (or use the place button) to put it down on the ground. It needs a flat surface of at least 2 tiles. Place it inside your first shelter so it stays protected — you will be using it constantly throughout the entire game.

Walk up to the Work Bench and open your inventory again. The crafting panel will now show a much larger list of recipes that require a Work Bench to make. This includes doors, wooden swords, chests, platforms, torches, and basic furniture. You will craft almost everything here during early game.
Craft your first essential items
With your Work Bench active, immediately craft a Wooden Sword (7 Wood) for better combat, Torches require a torch source but you can craft Wood Platforms (2 Wood each) for building, and a Wooden Door (6 Wood) to close off your shelter at night. These three items make your first night significantly safer.

You can make multiple Work Benches and place them in different locations — useful for a base, an underground mining camp, and a jungle outpost.
Different wood types create visually different Work Benches but they all function identically. Rich Mahogany and Boreal Wood benches look great for interior decoration.
The Work Bench also counts as a valid surface for NPC housing — NPCs can move into a room that has one, so it doubles as furniture for your first house.
Later in the game you will upgrade to a Sawmill (10 Wood + 2 Iron/Lead Bars + 1 Chain) to craft beds, dressers, and advanced furniture. The Work Bench is required to craft the Sawmill.
On mobile, tap and hold a tree to chop it faster. Getting 10 Wood takes about 5 seconds once you have an axe equipped.
The Work Bench is the first crafting station you will ever build in Terraria and it remains relevant for the entire game. Even in late-game bases you will keep one around because certain basic recipes — like torches and platforms — always require it. Think of it as the backbone of your crafting setup: every other station you build later (Furnace, Anvil, Sawmill, Alchemy Table) works alongside the Work Bench rather than replacing it.
