How to Get the Night’s Edge in Terraria

Last updated: June 2026  ·  6 min read

⚡ QUICK ANSWER

Craft the Night’s Edge at a Demon Altar or Crimson Altar using four swords: Blade of Grass (Jungle), Fiery Greatsword (Underworld), Muramasa (Dungeon), and either Light’s Bane (Corruption) or Blood Butcherer (Crimson). It is the best pre-Hardmode melee weapon in the game.

How to Craft the Night’s Edge — Step by Step

STEP 01

Get the Muramasa from the Dungeon

The Muramasa is the hardest component to obtain because it requires accessing the Dungeon — which is locked behind defeating Skeletron. Once Skeletron is dead, enter the Dungeon and search Gold Chests (the locked ones). You need a Golden Key (dropped by Dungeon skeletons or found in other Dungeon chests) to open them. The Muramasa has roughly a 1 in 6 chance of appearing in each Gold Chest, so bring multiple keys. Farm Dungeon skeletons until you have it.

🗝️ Requires: defeat Skeletron first + Golden Key to open Dungeon chests
STEP 02

Craft the Blade of Grass in the Jungle

Head to the Underground Jungle biome and collect 12 Jungle Spores (the glowing green orbs floating near the floor) and 15 Stingers (dropped by Hornets and Jungle Slimes). Return to your Work Bench and craft the Blade of Grass. The Jungle is dangerous at this stage — bring your best armor and healing potions, and watch out for Man Eaters and Spiked Jungle Slimes.

STEP 03

Craft the Fiery Greatsword in the Underworld

Mine Hellstone in the Underworld (Hell layer at the very bottom of the world). You need at least 60 Hellstone Ore to make 20 Hellstone Bars — each bar requires 3 Hellstone + 1 Obsidian. Obsidian is made by pouring water over lava, which is easy to do in the Underworld. Smelt the bars at a Hellforge (found in Underworld houses), then craft the Fiery Greatsword at your Iron Anvil.

STEP 04

Craft Light’s Bane or Blood Butcherer

This depends on your world type. Corruption worlds use Light’s Bane (10 Demonite Bars at an Iron Anvil) — Demonite comes from the Eye of Cthulhu or Eater of Worlds. Crimson worlds use Blood Butcherer (10 Crimtane Bars) — Crimtane comes from the Eye of Cthulhu or Brain of Cthulhu. Either sword works for the Night’s Edge recipe, so just craft whichever matches your world’s evil biome.

⚔️ Corruption: Light’s Bane (10 Demonite Bars)  |  Crimson: Blood Butcherer (10 Crimtane Bars)
STEP 05

Find a Demon Altar or Crimson Altar

Demon Altars spawn in Corruption biomes — look for the purple stone areas with the large glowing altar structures. Crimson Altars are found in the Crimson biome. You cannot craft or move these altars, so you must travel to them. They are always present in the world and usually close to the surface in their respective evil biomes. Bring all four swords with you before making the trip.

STEP 06

Craft the Night’s Edge at the Altar

Stand next to the Demon or Crimson Altar and open your inventory. The crafting panel will show the Night’s Edge recipe as long as you have all four swords in your inventory: Muramasa, Blade of Grass, Fiery Greatsword, and Light’s Bane or Blood Butcherer. Click it to craft — all four swords are consumed and the Night’s Edge appears in your inventory. Equip it immediately: at 42 base damage it is the strongest melee weapon available before Hardmode.

⚡ Night’s Edge: 42 damage, wide arc, fast swing speed

Pro Tips

1

Get the Muramasa first — it is the rarest and most RNG-dependent component. Once you have it, the other three swords are straightforward to craft with enough time and resources.

2

Bring a Water Candle into the Dungeon to increase enemy spawn rates, which means more Golden Key drops and faster Muramasa hunting.

3

The Night’s Edge is later used as a crafting component for the Terra Blade — one of the best swords in all of Hardmode. Crafting it now puts you on the path to that endgame weapon.

4

Mining Hellstone without an Obsidian Skull or Obsidian Shield will burn you. Craft one from 20 Obsidian at a Work Bench to prevent fire damage while mining in the Underworld.

5

The Night’s Edge has a wide melee arc that hits multiple enemies — it is excellent for clearing Dungeon rooms and Underworld exploration even before you use it as a crafting material later.

The Night’s Edge is one of Terraria’s most iconic weapons and crafting it represents the completion of your pre-Hardmode journey — it requires visiting every major biome and defeating multiple bosses to gather its four components. The process of getting it naturally pushes you through the Corruption or Crimson, the Jungle, the Dungeon, and the Underworld, covering the entire map and preparing you for the Wall of Flesh fight. Once you have it, you are essentially ready to enter Hardmode, where it eventually becomes an ingredient for the legendary Terra Blade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you craft the Night’s Edge in a Crimson world?

Yes. In Crimson worlds, replace Light’s Bane with a Blood Butcherer (crafted from 10 Crimtane Bars). Everything else — Muramasa, Blade of Grass, and Fiery Greatsword — is the same regardless of world type.

Where do I find the Muramasa in Terraria?

The Muramasa is found exclusively in Gold Chests inside the Dungeon. You need a Golden Key to open these chests. Keys drop from Dungeon skeletons or can be found in other chests. Skeletron must be defeated before you can enter the Dungeon safely.

Is the Night’s Edge worth crafting before Hardmode?

Absolutely. At 42 base damage it is by far the strongest pre-Hardmode melee weapon, with a wide swing arc that makes it great for clearing groups of enemies. It is also a required material for the Terra Blade in Hardmode, so crafting it now saves time later.

What does the Night’s Edge turn into in Hardmode?

The Night’s Edge is used to craft the True Night’s Edge at a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil in Hardmode using Broken Hero Swords. The True Night’s Edge then combines with the True Excalibur to make the Terra Blade — one of the best swords in the game.
