⚡ QUICK ANSWER

Palladium Ore is the Tier 1 Hardmode ore counterpart to Cobalt — approximately 50% of worlds generate Palladium instead of Cobalt after smashing the 1st Demon/Crimson Altar with the Pwnhammer. Mine with a Gold or Platinum Pickaxe minimum. Palladium Armor has a unique Palladium Shield set bonus that provides bursts of rapid HP regeneration after taking a hit.

How to Get Palladium in Terraria — Step by Step

STEP 01

Defeat Wall of Flesh to unlock Hardmode and get Pwnhammer

Palladium only spawns in Hardmode. Defeat the Wall of Flesh in the Underworld. It drops the Pwnhammer — the only tool that can break Demon or Crimson Altars to generate Hardmode ore veins underground.

🔥 Wall of Flesh → Pwnhammer → smash Altars to generate Palladium ore
STEP 02

Smash the 1st Demon or Crimson Altar

Find a Demon Altar (Corruption) or Crimson Altar (Crimson) and hit it with the Pwnhammer. The 1st Altar smash generates either Cobalt (blue) or Palladium (orange) somewhere underground. Whether you get Palladium or Cobalt is determined by your world seed. Note each Altar smash also permanently corrupts a random surface tile.

🔨 1st Altar smash = Palladium or Cobalt; smash strategically away from your base
STEP 03

Mine Palladium with a Gold or Platinum Pickaxe

Palladium Ore requires at minimum a Gold Pickaxe or Platinum Pickaxe (65%+ pickaxe power). Iron and Lead Pickaxes cannot mine it. The ore appears as warm orange/copper-colored veins in the Underground and Cavern layers. Use a Spelunker Potion to highlight it.

⛏️ Gold/Platinum Pickaxe minimum — orange ore, very visible in dark caves
STEP 04

Explore the Cavern layer for dense Palladium veins

The Cavern layer (deeper underground, below 0 depth) has higher Palladium density than the shallow Underground. Explore cave systems with a Spelunker Potion active — Palladium glows gold in the Spelunker highlight, making it easy to find. Mine thoroughly — you need 12 bars for the Palladium Pickaxe plus more for armor.

🗺️ Spelunker Potion in Cavern layer = most efficient Palladium collection
STEP 05

Smelt and craft the Palladium Pickaxe immediately

At any Furnace, smelt Palladium Ore into Palladium Bars. Craft the Palladium Pickaxe (12 Palladium Bars at Iron Anvil) as your first priority — it has significantly higher pickaxe power and can mine Tier 2 Hardmode ores (Orichalcum or Mythril) generated by the 2nd Altar smash.

⛏️ Palladium Pickaxe (12 bars) = unlocks Orichalcum/Mythril mining — top priority craft
STEP 06

Craft Palladium Armor for the shield set bonus

With extra bars, craft Palladium Armor at the Iron Anvil. The set bonus — Palladium Shield — gives a powerful burst of rapid HP regeneration for several seconds immediately after taking a hit. This makes Palladium Armor noticeably tankier than its stats suggest and a strong early Hardmode melee set.

🛡️ Palladium Shield = rapid HP regen burst after any hit — strong combat sustain bonus

Pro Tips

1

Palladium Armor’s set bonus is particularly strong on Expert mode where enemies deal more damage and the regeneration burst after hits provides meaningful sustain.

2

The Palladium Drill (also craftable from Palladium Bars) has identical pickaxe power to the Palladium Pickaxe but mines faster — craft it after the armor for better mining speed.

3

Whether your world has Palladium or Cobalt is fixed at creation. Cobalt is blue; Palladium is orange — easily distinguishable on the minimap and in caves.

4

Ore from multiple Altar smashes coexists underground simultaneously. After smashing 3 Altars you have Palladium, Orichalcum/Mythril, and Adamantite/Titanium all present in the same cave systems.

5

Smashing more Altars generates more Palladium veins (cycling through all three tiers again), so if you need more Palladium simply smash additional Altars while accepting the surface tile corruption.

Palladium is the Tier 1 Hardmode ore in half of all Terraria worlds. Its primary value is enabling the Palladium Pickaxe (which unlocks Tier 2 ore mining) and the Palladium Armor with its distinctive shield regeneration set bonus. Mine 12 bars for the Pickaxe first, then continue for armor — the orange color makes it one of the more visually distinctive Hardmode ores to identify during exploration.
