How to Brew Potions in Minecraft
Updated April 2026 · 2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
You need a Brewing Stand (crafted with 1 Blaze Rod + 3 Cobblestone), Blaze Powder as fuel, Water Bottles as the base, and Nether Wart as the first ingredient to make Awkward Potions. From there add a secondary ingredient — Magma Cream for Fire Resistance, Sugar for Speed, Glistering Melon for Healing, and so on. To get started, you’ll first need how to make a Nether Portal in Minecraft.
Step by Step
1
Get a Blaze Rod from the Nether. Kill Blazes in a Nether Fortress — they always drop Blaze Rods. You need at least 2: one to craft the Brewing Stand and one to turn into Blaze Powder for fuel. Bring extra for a stock of fuel. If you’re entering the Nether for gear progression too, see how to find Netherite in Minecraft.
2
Craft the Brewing Stand — place 1 Blaze Rod in the center of the top row and 3 Cobblestone across the bottom row of a crafting table. Place it in your base near a water source.
3
Fill Glass Bottles with water — craft Glass Bottles (3 Glass in a V shape) then right-click a water source to fill them. Place up to 3 Water Bottles in the bottom three slots of the Brewing Stand.
4
Add Blaze Powder to the fuel slot (top left) — one Blaze Powder fuels 20 brewing operations. Then place Nether Wart in the top ingredient slot. This brews your Water Bottles into Awkward Potions — the base for almost every useful potion in the game.
5
Add your secondary ingredient to the Awkward Potions to create the final potion. Common combinations: Magma Cream → Fire Resistance, Sugar → Swiftness, Glistering Melon Slice → Healing, Ghast Tear → Regeneration, Blaze Powder → Strength.
6
Upgrade with Glowstone or Redstone. Add Glowstone Dust to increase the potion’s power (level II). Add Redstone Dust to extend the duration. Add Gunpowder to convert any potion into a throwable Splash Potion.
Tips
→
Fire Resistance is the most useful potion for Nether exploration — it makes you completely immune to lava and fire damage. Always bring a stack before entering the Nether.
→
Nether Wart grows on Soul Sand — farm it in the Nether or bring Soul Sand and Nether Wart back to your base for an unlimited supply near your Brewing Stand.
→
Always brew 3 bottles at once — the Brewing Stand processes all three bottom slots simultaneously for the same fuel and ingredient cost as brewing one.
→
Strength II + Healing II is the standard boss fight loadout — Strength II doubles your melee damage and Healing II instantly restores 8 hearts per potion. Pair it with strong gear from how to enchant items in Minecraft.
