Unlike many other materials, you do not need to keep searching for new deposits — a single geode can supply shards forever as long as you leave the Budding Amethyst blocks untouched.

Amethyst is found exclusively inside Amethyst Geodes — large hollow spheres of smooth basalt and calcite containing an inner layer of Budding Amethyst. Geodes generate between Y -58 and Y 30, most commonly underground or occasionally exposed on the ocean floor. Mine the Amethyst Clusters (the fully grown purple crystals) with any pickaxe for 4 Amethyst Shards each. Fortune III increases drops to up to 16 shards per cluster. Look for Amethyst Geodes while caving. Geodes are large spherical structures — from the outside they look like a smooth rounded shell of basalt (dark black-grey). They appear frequently in cave systems between Y -58 and Y 30. Listen for a faint chiming sound that plays when you’re near one.

Break through the outer shell to enter. The geode has three layers — an outer layer of Smooth Basalt, a middle layer of Calcite, and an inner hollow chamber lined with Budding Amethyst. Mine through both outer layers to reach the inside. The calcite layer is softer and breaks quickly.

Wait for Amethyst Clusters to fully grow. Budding Amethyst blocks on the walls grow crystals in four stages: Small Bud → Medium Bud → Large Bud → Amethyst Cluster. Only the fully grown Amethyst Cluster (the largest, brightest purple crystal) drops Amethyst Shards when mined — earlier stages drop nothing useful.

Mine Clusters with any pickaxe. Each Amethyst Cluster drops 4 Amethyst Shards by default. Using Fortune III increases this to up to 16 shards per cluster. Using Silk Touch harvests the cluster as a block instead of shards — only do this if you want the decorative block for building. Leave Budding Amethyst blocks intact to farm passively. The purple Budding Amethyst blocks on the walls (identifiable by a small cross-shaped crack on their face) cannot be moved or picked up even with Silk Touch — they are permanent. New clusters grow from them over time, making each geode a renewable source if you only harvest the fully grown clusters.
