⚡ Quick Answer

Hardwood comes from chopping Large Stumps (give 2 Hardwood each) and Large Logs (give 8 Hardwood each) with a Copper Axe or better. The six Large Stumps on your farm respawn daily and are your most reliable early source. The Secret Woods north of your farm contains 6 more stumps that also reset every day — access requires a Steel Axe to break the log blocking the entrance.

Step by Step
1 Upgrade your Axe to Copper at minimum. A basic starter Axe cannot chop Large Stumps — it just bounces off. Take your Axe to Clint’s Blacksmith and upgrade it to Copper (2,000g + 5 Copper Bars). This is the only requirement to start harvesting Hardwood from stumps on your farm.
2 Chop the Large Stumps on your farm daily. Your Standard Farm starts with 6 Large Stumps scattered around — each gives 2 Hardwood when chopped. They respawn every morning, giving you a guaranteed 12 Hardwood per day for free without leaving your farm. This is your primary early-game source.
3 Unlock the Secret Woods for 12 more Hardwood per day. The Secret Woods is in the northwest corner of Cindersap Forest, blocked by a Large Log. You need a Steel Axe (second upgrade tier) to break the log. Inside are 6 more Large Stumps that also reset daily — doubling your Hardwood income to 24 per day.
4 Chop Large Logs around the map. Large Logs appear in various locations in Cindersap Forest and other areas — they give 8 Hardwood each but do not respawn after being cut. Use these as a one-time supplement when you need a large amount quickly, such as when building the Stable or Farmhouse upgrades.
5 Build a Mahogany Tree farm for unlimited Hardwood. Plant Mahogany Seeds on your farm (dropped by Mahogany Trees or bought rarely from the Traveling Cart). Mahogany Trees grow in any season and drop 8–12 Hardwood when fully grown. A grove of 20 Mahogany Trees chopped and replanted continuously provides more Hardwood than you’ll ever need.
Tips
Hardwood is required for major builds — the Stable (100 Hardwood), the Farmhouse upgrade to get a basement (150 Hardwood), Willy’s Boat repair (200 Hardwood), and several crafting recipes like the Cork Bobber and Cheese Press all need significant amounts.
The Secret Woods also contains rare forage — Fiddlehead Ferns in Summer and Red Mushrooms in Fall grow there exclusively. Visit daily in those seasons to collect both Hardwood and valuable forageables in one trip.
Robin buys Hardwood at 15g each if you ever have excess — not a great return but useful if your storage is full and you need quick gold in the early game before better money-making methods are available.
Lumberjack profession (Foraging level 10) makes all trees occasionally drop Hardwood in addition to regular Wood — a significant passive boost that adds up significantly over a full playthrough of daily tree chopping.
Hardwood is one of the most in-demand resources in Stardew Valley’s mid and late game — the amount needed for the Stable, boat repair, and crafting recipes adds up to several hundred pieces, which is why establishing the Secret Woods stump routine early matters. Players who upgrade their Axe to Steel and unlock the Secret Woods in Spring Year 1 arrive at every major building project with plenty of Hardwood already stockpiled, while those who skip it end up grinding stumps for days when they finally need it.
