How to Make a Water Elevator in Minecraft
Updated April 2026 · 3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
Build a 1×1 column of blocks, fill it with water from the top, then place a Soul Sand at the bottom to go up (creates bubble columns) or Magma Block at the bottom to go down. Enter the column and the bubbles carry you automatically — no swimming required.
How to Build a Water Elevator
1
Build a 1×1 enclosed column from the bottom floor to the top floor using any solid block. The column must be fully enclosed on all four sides — leave the top and bottom open. Make it as tall as you need. Glass works well so you can see through it.
2
Place a door or sign at the bottom entrance to hold the water inside. Any door or wall sign creates a water barrier — the water won’t flow through it but you can walk through a door. This keeps your elevator sealed without blocking entry.
3
Fill the column with water from the top. Stand at the top and pour a single water bucket — it flows all the way down and fills every block. If any gaps appear, pour another bucket into the gaps until the entire column is filled with water source blocks.
4
Place Soul Sand at the very bottom for an upward elevator. Soul Sand creates upward bubble columns through any water above it — stand in the column and you are pushed to the top automatically. For a downward elevator, use a Magma Block at the bottom instead — it pulls you down.
5
Test the elevator by stepping in at the bottom. You should be pushed upward quickly without swimming. If it doesn’t work, check that every water block in the column is a source block (not flowing water) — replace any flowing blocks with bucket placements until the column is fully filled with sources.
Water Elevator Tips
→
Use Kelp to convert flowing water to source blocks: if your column has flowing water gaps, place kelp from the bottom up through the entire column, then break the kelp. This converts every water block into a source block instantly — much faster than placing individual buckets.
→
Build two side-by-side columns: one with Soul Sand (up) and one with Magma Block (down) gives you a full two-way elevator system. Use different colored stained glass for each column so you always know which side goes up and which goes down.
→
You won’t take drowning damage: the bubble columns constantly push you upward so fast that you never run out of air inside a properly built water elevator. You only start losing air if you stop moving inside the column without a bubble source.
→
Soul Sand is found in the Nether: you need to enter the Nether to get Soul Sand — it generates naturally on the floor of the Nether and in Soul Sand Valleys. Bring a full inventory worth before returning since you may want multiple elevators.
→
Magma Block elevator deals damage: the downward Magma Block elevator slowly damages you while you stand on the block at the bottom. Add a water source or landing platform one block away from the Magma Block to step off quickly and avoid the burn damage on arrival.
FAQ
Why is my water elevator not working in Minecraft?
The most common cause is flowing water instead of source blocks in the column. Every water block must be a source block for the bubble column to form. Use the kelp method — place kelp from bottom to top then break it — to convert all flowing water to source blocks instantly.
What block makes you go up in a water elevator?
Soul Sand placed at the bottom of a water column creates upward bubble columns that push you to the top. Magma Block at the bottom creates downward bubble columns that pull you down. Both require the entire column to be filled with water source blocks to work.
Can you make a water elevator without Soul Sand?
Not an automatic one — Soul Sand and Magma Block are the only blocks that create bubble columns. Without them you can still swim up a water column manually, but it is much slower and drains your air. For a fast elevator you need Soul Sand from the Nether.
Do water elevators work in Bedrock Edition?
Yes — Soul Sand bubble column elevators work in both Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft. The build process is identical on both platforms. The kelp conversion trick also works on Bedrock.
