How to Get Sponge in Minecraft
Updated April 2026 · 3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
Sponges are found exclusively inside Ocean Monuments — in dedicated sponge rooms containing 30 or more wet sponges, and dropped by the Elder Guardian boss (1 sponge per kill). Dry the wet sponge in a furnace or by placing it in the Nether to make it reusable.
How to Get Sponges
1
Find an Ocean Monument. Ocean Monuments are large underwater structures that generate in Deep Ocean biomes. Use the command /locate structure ocean_monument in Java Edition to find the nearest one instantly. In survival without commands, sail across deep ocean biomes and look for the distinctive dark prismarine structure on the seafloor — they generate roughly every 64–128 chunks.
2
Prepare for the monument. Bring potions of Water Breathing (3+ minutes each), Night Vision potions, and strong armor. The monument has three Elder Guardians that inflict Mining Fatigue III — this prevents you from breaking blocks efficiently until you kill them. A Conduit or Respiration helmet significantly helps underwater survival.
3
Find the sponge rooms. Ocean Monuments contain 1–4 sponge rooms — large chambers packed with 30+ wet sponge blocks on the walls and ceiling. Explore the monument’s interior systematically. Each sponge room is a massive haul — a single room can yield 30–60 wet sponges depending on size.
4
Kill Elder Guardians for bonus sponges. Each of the three Elder Guardians drops 1 wet sponge on death. They are tough — high health and deal heavy damage — but killing all three also removes the Mining Fatigue debuff, making the rest of the monument much easier to loot.
5
Dry the wet sponges. Wet sponges cannot absorb water. Place them in a furnace with any fuel to dry them into usable sponges — each wet sponge produces 1 dry sponge. Alternatively, place wet sponges anywhere in the Nether — they dry instantly with no fuel cost.
Sponge Tips
→
Dry sponges in the Nether for free: the fastest way to dry a large haul of wet sponges is to go through your Nether portal and place them on the ground — they dry instantly in the arid Nether atmosphere with zero fuel cost. Much faster than running a furnace for 60+ sponges.
→
One sponge absorbs up to 65 water blocks: a single placed sponge removes all water source blocks within a 7-block radius — up to 65 blocks total. This makes sponges extraordinarily powerful for draining large underwater areas or clearing flooded builds.
→
Drain ocean monuments with sponges: many players use sponges to drain the interior of the Ocean Monument itself for a dry base or farm. Place sponges systematically from top to bottom, collect the wet sponges, dry them in the Nether, and repeat until the monument interior is empty.
→
Silk Touch to collect placed sponges: once a sponge is placed and absorbs water it becomes a wet sponge. Mine it with any tool — Silk Touch is not required. Any tool including your hand collects placed sponges, though a hoe is technically the fastest tool for sponge mining.
→
Milk cures Mining Fatigue: drinking milk removes the Elder Guardian’s Mining Fatigue debuff immediately. Bring several buckets of milk from cows before raiding a monument — drink one as soon as you enter to break blocks at normal speed while the Elder Guardians are still alive.
FAQ
Where do sponges spawn in Minecraft?
Sponges only spawn inside Ocean Monuments — in dedicated sponge rooms containing 30+ wet sponges, and as drops from the three Elder Guardian bosses inside the monument. They do not generate anywhere else in the world and cannot be crafted.
How do you dry a wet sponge in Minecraft?
Place the wet sponge in a furnace with any fuel source to produce a dry sponge. The fastest method is to place wet sponges anywhere in the Nether — they dry instantly with no fuel cost due to the Nether’s arid environment.
How many water blocks does a sponge absorb?
A sponge absorbs all water source blocks within a 7-block radius — up to 65 blocks in total. Once saturated it becomes a wet sponge and stops absorbing. Mine it, dry it, and replace it to continue draining larger bodies of water.
Can you get sponges without going to an Ocean Monument?
No — sponges are exclusive to Ocean Monuments in survival mode. There is no crafting recipe, no alternative drop source, and no other structure that contains them. Ocean Monuments are the only way to obtain sponges in vanilla Minecraft.
