How to Tame a Wolf in Minecraft
Updated April 2026 · 3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
Feed a wild wolf Bones one at a time until hearts appear and its collar turns red — this means it is tamed. Each bone has roughly a 1 in 3 chance of taming the wolf, so bring at least 10 bones per attempt. Bones drop from skeletons or can be found in chests across the world.
How to Tame a Wolf
1
Find wolves in the wild. Wolves spawn naturally in Taiga, Old Growth Taiga, Snowy Taiga, and Grove biomes — cold forested areas with spruce trees. They also spawn occasionally in Forests and Meadows. They appear in packs of 4 and are neutral — they will not attack you unless provoked. Look for the grey wolf model wandering the forest floor.
2
Stock up on Bones. Each taming attempt consumes one Bone with roughly a 33% success chance. Bring at least 10–15 Bones per wolf to account for multiple failed attempts. The fastest source is killing Skeletons at night or in mob farms — each skeleton drops 0–2 bones. Bones are also found in Desert Temple, Dungeon, and Ancient City chests.
3
Feed the wolf Bones one at a time. Approach the wolf and right-click it with a Bone in your hand. One of two things happens: smoke particles appear (failed attempt — try again) or heart particles appear and the wolf sits down with a red collar (success — it is tamed). Keep feeding until you see hearts. Do not run away between attempts or the wolf may wander off.
4
Command your tamed wolf. Right-click your tamed wolf to make it sit (it stays in place) or stand (it follows you). A sitting wolf will not follow you or teleport to you. A standing wolf follows you everywhere, teleports to you if you move far away, and attacks any mob you attack or that attacks you. Use sit to leave it safely at your base.
5
Keep your wolf healthy. Tamed wolves have 20 health points — the same as a player. Feed them any meat (raw or cooked — beef, chicken, pork, mutton, rabbit, or rotten flesh) to restore health. The wolf’s tail angle indicates its health — tail held high means full health, tail drooping low means it is injured. Heal it before taking it into dangerous areas.
Wolf Tips
→
Tame multiple wolves for a pack: you can tame as many wolves as you want — there is no limit. A pack of 5–6 tamed wolves following you makes overworld exploration much safer. Each wolf can deal significant damage to hostile mobs and they prioritise any mob attacking you, effectively acting as a bodyguard army.
→
Wolves attack skeletons automatically: tamed wolves have a built-in hatred of skeletons — they attack any skeleton on sight without being commanded to. This makes them naturally useful in the Overworld at night and in the Nether since Wither Skeletons also trigger their aggression.
→
Dye the collar any color: right-click your wolf while holding any dye to change its collar color. This is purely cosmetic but useful for identifying multiple wolves — give each one a different collar color to tell them apart. Red is the default, but all 16 dye colors are available.
→
Sit wolves before entering dangerous areas: always right-click your wolves to sit them before entering Nether portals, fighting bosses, or going underground. Wolves can die from lava, fall damage, and powerful mobs — a sitting wolf at your base is safe. Losing a tamed wolf to an accidental lava fall is a common frustration.
→
Breed wolves with meat: feed two tamed adult wolves any meat to breed them — they produce a tamed puppy that already belongs to you with no bone feeding required. Breeding is the most efficient way to build a large wolf pack once you have your first two tamed wolves, as puppies are automatically tamed.
FAQ
What do wolves eat to tame in Minecraft?
Wolves are tamed exclusively with Bones — no other item works for taming. Each bone has approximately a 33% chance of success. To heal a tamed wolf after taming, feed it any type of meat including raw or cooked beef, chicken, pork, mutton, rabbit, or even rotten flesh.
Where do wolves spawn in Minecraft?
Wolves spawn in Taiga, Old Growth Taiga, Snowy Taiga, and Grove biomes — cold forested areas with spruce trees. They appear in packs of 4 and are neutral until provoked. In Minecraft 1.21 additional wolf variants were added that spawn in specific biomes including Forests and Meadows.
How many bones does it take to tame a wolf in Minecraft?
Each bone has a 33% (1 in 3) chance of taming the wolf. On average it takes 3 bones, but due to RNG it can take anywhere from 1 to 20+ bones. Always carry at least 10–15 bones before attempting to tame a wolf to avoid running out mid-attempt.
Can tamed wolves die in Minecraft?
Yes — tamed wolves have 20 health points and can die from mob attacks, lava, fall damage, fire, and other hazards. Always sit your wolves (right-click to toggle sit mode) before entering dangerous areas. Feed them meat to heal them back to full health before taking them into combat.
