How to Find a Stronghold in Minecraft
Tips
There are 128 strongholds in every Minecraft world, spread in rings around the origin point. The closest ones are roughly 1,000-2,800 blocks from spawn, the furthest are over 20,000 blocks out. You’ll almost always find the first stronghold within 2,000 blocks of spawn. Once you activate the End Portal you can fight the Ender Dragon — defeating it is considered completing the main objective of Minecraft’s base game.

Throw an Eye of Ender and follow where it flies — it always points toward the nearest stronghold. Throw several in a row walking in the direction it flies. When it starts going downward instead of forward, you’re directly above the stronghold. Then dig down to find it. You need Blaze Powder + Ender Pearls to craft Eyes of Ender.

Craft Eyes of Ender. You need Ender Pearls (dropped by Endermen) and Blaze Powder (made from Blaze Rods dropped by Blazes in Nether Fortresses). If you still need access to the Nether, learn how to build a Nether portal first. Combine one Ender Pearl + one Blaze Powder in a crafting grid to get one Eye of Ender. Bring at least 12.

Throw an Eye of Ender. Hold the Eye of Ender and right-click to throw it. It flies upward and forward toward the nearest stronghold, then drops back down. Sometimes it shatters — this is normal, it happens about 20% of the time.

Walk in the direction it flew and throw again. Pick it up if it didn’t shatter and keep walking in the direction it pointed. Throw another one every 50-100 blocks to adjust your course. The stronghold can be anywhere from 500 to 2000+ blocks from spawn.

When the Eye starts going straight down — dig. As you get close, the Eye will start flying upward but at a steep angle, then eventually go almost straight down. That means you’re standing above the stronghold. Dig straight down carefully (avoid digging into lava or a void).

Find the End Portal room. Strongholds are maze-like structures with multiple rooms. Explore until you find a room with a square frame of End Portal Frames over a lava pool. Place Eyes of Ender in each empty frame slot to activate the portal — you’ll need up to 12 Eyes total. Before entering, make sure you’re prepared to defeat the Ender Dragon.

Use the command /locate structure stronghold if cheats are enabled — it gives exact coordinates instantly and saves all your Eyes of Ender.

Strongholds generate at Y: 30-40 typically. When digging down, switch to branch mining at that depth if you overshoot.

Some End Portal Frames in strongholds already have Eyes of Ender pre-filled — you may need fewer than 12 to activate the portal.

Bring torches, food and weapons — strongholds are full of Silverfish and other mobs that spawn in the dark rooms. Having strong gear and enchantments from efficient XP farming makes exploration much safer.
