⚡ Quick Answer

The fastest XP methods are killing mobs in a mob farm, smelting large quantities of items in furnaces and mining Nether Quartz. A simple mob farm at Y:128 gives thousands of XP per hour completely AFK. For quick levels early game, mine Nether Quartz — each ore drops 2-5 XP instantly.

Best XP Methods by Stage
1 Mine Nether Quartz. Each Nether Quartz ore drops 2-5 XP when mined. It’s the fastest early XP source — spend 10 minutes mining quartz in the Nether and you’ll gain several levels instantly without needing any farm.
2 Mid game — build a simple mob farm. Dig a platform at Y:128 (above the cloud line, nothing spawns higher). Light up all the ground nearby so mobs only spawn on your platform. Add a drop shaft and a kill spot. Mobs fall, you hit them once and collect XP. Extremely efficient.
3 Mid game — use a furnace array. Smelt large quantities of items (sand into glass, logs into charcoal, potatoes into baked potatoes). Each item smelted gives XP when you take it out of the furnace. Smelt 1000 items and collect massive XP all at once.
4 Late game — build a spawner farm. Find a dungeon or mineshaft with a mob spawner. Build a farm around it with a water flushing system and a kill chamber. Spawner farms give the most XP per hour of any method in the game.
5 Trade with villagers. Cured zombie villagers give huge discounts. Trading repeatedly with them gives XP each transaction and also levels up the villager, unlocking better trades.
Tips
Use a sword with Looting III when killing mobs — more drops means more XP over time from your farm.
Don’t die with high XP levels — you lose half your XP on death. Enchant or bank your levels before risky activities.
Bottle o’ Enchanting (bought from villagers) gives instant XP when thrown — useful in a pinch but not efficient for farming.
Fishing also gives XP with every catch — not the fastest method but completely AFK-able with an AFK fish farm setup.
XP in Minecraft is used primarily for enchanting gear and repairing items on an anvil. The most efficient use of XP farming is to save up to level 30 (maximum enchanting level) and then enchant your best gear. After that, keep farming to repair and combine enchantments. A good mob farm makes XP management essentially a non-issue for the rest of your playthrough. More Minecraft guides
