How to Get a Saddle in Minecraft

⚡ Quick Answer

Saddles cannot be crafted — you have to find one. The fastest ways are: loot a chest in a village tannery (high chance), fish with a Luck of the Sea III rod, or trade with a Leatherworker villager at master level. Dungeons and Nether Fortresses also have saddles in chests.

Best Ways to Get a Saddle
1 Village tannery chest — easiest method. Find a village and look for the tannery building (it has a cauldron inside). The chest has a roughly 17% chance of containing a saddle. Check multiple villages if the first one doesn’t have it.
2 Trade with a Leatherworker villager. Level a Leatherworker to Master level (trade with them repeatedly). At master level they sell saddles for around 6 emeralds. This is the most reliable repeatable method once you have a village.
3 Fishing with Luck of the Sea III. Enchant a fishing rod with Luck of the Sea III and fish in an open body of water. Saddles are in the «treasure» loot table and appear occasionally. AFK fishing farms make this fully passive.
4 Dungeon or Nether Fortress chests. Dungeons (underground rooms with a spawner) have chests with a ~28% saddle chance. Nether Fortress chests also contain saddles. Explore mineshafts and fortresses and check every chest.
5 Desert temple and jungle temple chests. Both structure types have chests that can contain saddles. Desert temples have 4 chests under the floor — watch out for the pressure plate trap when opening them.
Tips
The village tannery is the fastest early game method — find a village and check it before doing anything else.
Saddles can also be found on already-saddled mobs like horses, pigs and striders — kill them to get the saddle back.
Once you have a saddle on a horse you can retrieve it by opening the horse inventory (press E while riding).
Ravagers (raid mobs) always drop a saddle when killed — if your village is being raided, kill the Ravager for a guaranteed saddle.
Saddles are one of the few non-craftable items in Minecraft alongside things like name tags and elytra. The developers intentionally kept them as loot-only to make exploration worthwhile. Once you have a saddle you can ride horses, pigs (with a carrot on a stick) and striders in the Nether (with a warped fungus on a stick). Horses are the fastest land transport in the game once tamed and equipped. More Minecraft guides
