Gather 4 Iron Ingots and 1 Redstone Dust. Smelt Iron Ore in a Furnace to get Iron Ingots — Iron Ore is common between Y=15 and Y=232, most abundant near Y=16. For Redstone Dust, mine Redstone Ore (found between Y=-64 and Y=16, most common at Y=-58) with an Iron or better pickaxe — each ore drops 4–5 Redstone Dust. Open a Crafting Table (3×3 grid). Right-click a placed Crafting Table to open the 3×3 grid. The Compass recipe requires the full 3×3 layout — it cannot be made in your 2×2 personal inventory grid.

Place materials in a plus (+) pattern. Put 1 Redstone Dust in the exact center cell of the grid. Then place 1 Iron Ingot in each of the four cells directly above, below, left, and right of the center. Leave all four corner cells empty. This cross/plus pattern is the only valid Compass recipe — the arrangement must be centered.

Collect your Compass. The Compass appears in the output slot. Click it to add it to your inventory. The Compass needle spins while in your inventory but stabilises when held in your hand or placed in your hotbar — it always points toward the world spawn point (the location where you first spawned, or the last bed you set in that world in some versions).

Use it to navigate back to spawn. Hold the Compass in your hand or place it in your hotbar — the red needle points toward your world spawn. Walk in the direction the needle points to return to spawn from anywhere in the Overworld. Note: Compasses do not work in the Nether or the End — the needle spins randomly in both dimensions. A Map combined with a Compass creates a locator map that shows your exact position.

Link it to a Lodestone for custom navigation. To point the Compass at any custom location instead of spawn, craft a Lodestone (8 Chiselled Stone Bricks + 1 Netherite Ingot) and place it at the location you want to track. Right-click the Lodestone with your Compass — it becomes a glowing Lodestone Compass that permanently points to that Lodestone. Unlike a regular Compass, a Lodestone Compass works in all three dimensions as long as the Lodestone is in the same dimension.

Combine a Compass with a Map to see your position in real time: craft a Map and then add a Compass to it on a Crafting Table or in an Anvil to create a Locator Map.
