Iron is the backbone of early-to-mid Minecraft progression — it bridges the gap between Stone tools and Diamond gear and is required for dozens of essential items. Unlike Diamonds, Iron is abundant enough that you should never feel scarce once you’re mining at the right depth. Always smelt everything you mine in batches, keep a Blast Furnace running in your base, and upgrade to Fortune III as soon as possible to multiply every ore trip’s output. Once you’re established, an Iron Golem farm provides a fully passive iron income without any mining at all.

Craft a Stone Pickaxe — the minimum tool required to mine Iron Ore. A Wooden Pickaxe will break Iron Ore blocks without dropping anything. Place 3 Cobblestone in the top row and 2 Sticks in the middle column on your crafting table.

Find Iron Ore — look for grey stone blocks with orange-brown flecks. It’s extremely common and visible on cave walls, cliff faces, and inside mineshafts almost immediately. Dig down or enter any cave and you’ll see it within minutes.

For the most efficient mining, dig to Y=16 using F3 (Java) or the coordinates display (Bedrock). At this depth, Iron generates at its highest concentration alongside other useful ores. A simple branch mine (dig a main tunnel and side tunnels every 3 blocks) works well here.
