Irithyll of the Boreal Valley is one of the biggest progression milestones in Dark Souls 3. Reaching it means you have cleared several major story areas and are moving into one of the game’s most dangerous mid-game zones. The enemies are faster, more aggressive, and less forgiving than earlier regions, so entering prepared makes a huge difference.

To get to Irithyll of the Boreal Valley in Dark Souls 3, you need the Small Doll from the Deacons of the Deep boss fight in the Cathedral of the Deep. Then progress through Farron Keep, defeat the Abyss Watchers, clear the Catacombs of Carthus, and beat High Lord Wolnir. After Wolnir, cross the bridge into Irithyll and use the Small Doll at the barrier to enter.

Defeat the Abyss Watchers in Farron Keep. This is the first major requirement for reaching Irithyll through the main story path. After the fight, the way forward opens into the Catacombs of Carthus.

Navigate the Catacombs of Carthus. This area is full of skeleton enemies, traps, and narrow paths, so activate every bonfire you find. If you struggled earlier, it helps to already know how to beat the Abyss Watchers in Dark Souls 3 before pushing into this section.

Defeat High Lord Wolnir. He waits at the end of the Catacombs of Carthus. To win, destroy the glowing bracelets on his arms while avoiding the dark mist around him. Once Wolnir is defeated, the path to Irithyll opens.

Use the Small Doll to enter. At the entrance barrier, the game checks whether you have the Small Doll in your inventory. This item is obtained from the Deacons of the Deep in the Cathedral of the Deep. If you do not have it, you must go back and clear that boss first before Irithyll will open.
