⚡ Quick Answer

Feed the same food item to two adults of the same animal while standing close to them — hearts will appear and a baby will spawn. Each animal has a specific food: Cows and Sheep → Wheat, Pigs → Carrot, Potato, or Beetroot, Chickens → Seeds, Wolves → any raw meat, Cats → raw Cod or Salmon. After breeding there is a 5 minute cooldown before the same two animals can breed again. Breeding horses is slightly different — here’s how to tame a horse in Minecraft first.

Breeding Food by Animal
1 Cows and Mooshrooms → Wheat. Hold Wheat in your hand to attract them, then feed one Wheat to each of two adults standing near each other. A calf spawns after the hearts animation. Cows are the most important animal to farm — they provide Beef, Leather, and Milk.
2 Sheep → Wheat. Same process as cows. Baby sheep inherit the wool color of one of the parents — breed two differently colored sheep to get mixed colors naturally without using dye.
3 Pigs → Carrot, Potato, or Beetroot. Any of the three works. Pigs drop Porkchop and can be ridden with a Saddle and a Carrot on a Stick — useful early game before horses.
4 Chickens → any Seeds (Wheat Seeds, Melon Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Beetroot Seeds). Chickens are the easiest passive food source — they lay Eggs every 5–10 minutes and drop Feathers for arrows.
5 Wolves (tamed) → any raw or cooked meat. You must tame both wolves first using Bones before you can breed them. Tamed wolves breed with any meat — Raw Chicken, Beef, Porkchop, Mutton, or Rabbit.
6 Horses and Donkeys → Golden Apple or Golden Carrot. Both parents must be tamed first. Breeding two horses produces a foal that may have better stats than either parent — speed, jump height, and HP are all inherited randomly with a chance of improvement.
Tips
Build a fenced pen before breeding — animals wander and babies can escape through gaps. Use a gate to enter and exit without releasing the herd.
Breed Cows first — Leather is required for Books, which are needed for Bookshelves, which unlock level 30 enchantments. A small cow farm early on unlocks the entire enchanting system faster. That makes it much easier to follow how to enchant items in Minecraft.
Use a lead to drag animals from the wild back to your base — right-click an animal with a Lead (crafted from String and Slimeball) to attach it and walk them home. If you’re working with pigs or horses too, you may also need how to get a saddle in Minecraft.
Breed Turtles with Seagrass on a beach — they lay Eggs that hatch into babies which drop Scutes. Collect 5 Scutes to craft a Turtle Shell helmet that grants Water Breathing.
Animal breeding is one of the first systems worth mastering in a new survival world. A self-sustaining cow and chicken farm covers your food needs indefinitely and provides the leather for books and the feathers for arrows. Cows are especially important because leather feeds directly into book crafting, which then supports bookshelves and the full enchanting setup. Once your farm is running, the next progression step is usually how to enchant items in Minecraft. If you plan to expand into transport and mounted exploration, breeding horses becomes much more useful after learning how to tame a horse in Minecraft. And if you want to ride them properly, you’ll eventually need how to get a saddle in Minecraft. Once you have a stable herd of 6–8 animals of each type, you rarely need to hunt for food again — just breed on demand and harvest the excess. More Minecraft guides
