How to Get to the Painted World in Dark Souls 3
Updated April 2026 · 3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
The Painted World of Ariandel is DLC content — you need the Ashes of Ariandel DLC installed. Once installed, travel to the Cathedral of the Deep and find the NPC Slave Knight Gael sitting near the altar on the left side of the main hall. Speak to him and accept his offer to be transported to the Painted World.
How to Reach the Painted World of Ariandel
1
Own the Ashes of Ariandel DLC. The Painted World of Ariandel is not part of the base game — it requires the first DLC expansion. On PC it is available on Steam; on consoles it can be purchased separately or as part of The Fire Fades Edition which includes both DLCs. Confirm the DLC is installed before searching for the entrance.
2
Progress to the Cathedral of the Deep. The DLC entrance is in the Cathedral of the Deep — you need to have reached this area in the main game. The Cathedral is accessed after defeating the Abyss Watchers and progressing through the Road of Sacrifices. You do not need to have beaten the Cathedral’s boss to access the DLC entrance.
3
Find Slave Knight Gael inside the Cathedral. Enter the Cathedral of the Deep through the main doors. Turn left immediately upon entering — Gael sits in a chair near the altar on the left side of the nave. He is a cloaked figure in dark armour. If you have the DLC installed he will be there regardless of your progress in the Cathedral itself.
4
Speak to Gael and accept his offer. Interact with Gael and exhaust his dialogue. He will ask you to accompany him to the Painted World. Select «Yes» when prompted — you will be immediately transported to the snowy landscape of the Painted World of Ariandel. Activate the first Site of Grace upon arrival before exploring.
5
Return via fast travel at any time. Once you have activated a Site of Grace in the Painted World, you can fast travel between it and the main game freely using the bonfire menu. You are never locked into the DLC — come and go as needed and return at a higher level if the difficulty feels too steep initially.
What to Expect in the Painted World
→
Recommended level 70–80: the Painted World is balanced for mid-to-late game characters. Arrive with a Soul Level of 70+ and a +8 or higher weapon for comfortable progression through the DLC. The final boss is significantly harder than most main game bosses.
→
Sister Friede is the final boss: the DLC culminates in a three-phase fight against Sister Friede and Father Ariandel — widely considered one of the hardest boss encounters in Dark Souls 3. Phase 3 is particularly brutal. See our best build guide if you need to optimize for this fight.
→
Abundant new weapons and spells: the Painted World adds numerous unique weapons including the Friede’s Great Scythe, the Onyx Blade, and the Pyromancy Flame (new pyromancies). Explore every corner of the snowy landscape — many of the best items are off the beaten path.
→
Rope Bridge — take the ladder instead: early in the DLC you encounter a rope bridge with an enemy that cuts it if you cross. Instead of crossing the bridge, look for a ladder on the left before the bridge — it leads to a safer path and avoids the bridge trap entirely.
→
Connected to The Ringed City: completing Ashes of Ariandel and speaking with Gael at the end of the DLC unlocks a connection to the second DLC, The Ringed City. If you own both DLCs, Ariandel is the recommended order to play them in for story continuity.
FAQ
Do I need to beat the Cathedral of the Deep boss to access the Painted World?
No — you only need to reach the interior of the Cathedral of the Deep to find Slave Knight Gael. You do not need to defeat the Deacons of the Deep or any other boss inside the Cathedral. Simply entering the main hall and turning left is enough to find Gael and access the DLC.
Where exactly is Slave Knight Gael in the Cathedral of the Deep?
Enter the Cathedral of the Deep through the main front doors and turn left immediately. Gael sits in a wooden chair near the altar on the left side of the nave, close to the wall. He appears as a cloaked figure in dark armour and is only present if you have the Ashes of Ariandel DLC installed.
Can I leave the Painted World and come back?
Yes — once you activate any Site of Grace in the Painted World of Ariandel, you can fast travel between it and the main game at any time using the bonfire menu. There is no point of no return in this DLC and you can revisit it as many times as needed throughout your playthrough.
What is the recommended level for the Painted World DLC?
Soul Level 70–80 with a +8 or higher weapon is a comfortable entry point for the Painted World. The final boss Sister Friede is significantly harder than most main game content and is better approached at level 80+ with a fully upgraded weapon. The DLC scales harder than base game areas of equivalent story position.
