How to Beat Oceiros in Dark Souls 3
Tips for OceirosOceiros, the Consumed King is a fascinating optional boss — a former scholar king who consumed a dragon egg and transformed into a draconic monstrosity, still cradling an invisible infant throughout the fight. The fight itself rewards the same safe-zone behind-the-enemy approach that works throughout Dark Souls 3. Once you find the tail position in Phase 1 and learn the charge dodge in Phase 2, he falls quickly. Beyond the boss reward, the area behind him contains the Path of the Dragon gesture for Archdragon Peak and a passage to the Twin Princes area — making him a valuable fight even if not strictly required.FAQ
⚡ Quick Answer
How to Beat Oceiros, the Consumed KingStay behind Oceiros at all times and hug his tail — most of his attacks target the front and sides. His most dangerous moves are the tail slam AoE in Phase 1 and the charge attack in Phase 2. When he rears up to charge, sprint sideways to avoid the path entirely rather than rolling through it.
1
Understand the two phases. Phase 1 has Oceiros upright — he uses magic spells, a tail slam, and a stomp combo. Phase 2 triggers at roughly 50% health when he drops to all fours and becomes much faster and more aggressive, gaining a devastating charge attack and a poison breath that covers large areas. Phase 2 is significantly more dangerous than Phase 1.
2
Phase 1 — stay under his tail and attack his legs. Position yourself directly behind Oceiros near his tail. His magic blasts and claw attacks all fire forward — from behind his tail you can attack freely with almost no risk. When he raises his tail for a slam, roll away from the tail not into it, then immediately reposition behind him after the slam lands.
3
Phase 1 — avoid his spinning attack. Occasionally Oceiros spins in a wide circle sweeping his tail and claws — this is unavoidable if you are close. The tell is him rearing up slightly before spinning. Sprint away from him completely when you see this animation and re-engage after the spin ends. Do not try to roll through it — the hitbox persists throughout the full rotation.
4
Phase 2 — watch for the charge. Oceiros drops to all fours and immediately becomes faster. His charge attack covers the entire arena in a straight line — when he lowers his head and accelerates, sprint hard sideways to get out of the charge path. The charge does not track mid-animation so a clean lateral sprint always works. After the charge he skids to a stop — punish him during the recovery animation with 2–3 hits.
5
Phase 2 — dodge the poison breath. Oceiros breathes a pool of poison across the arena floor. The cloud lingers — avoid standing in it even after the breath ends. Sprint through gaps in the poison cloud to maintain close range and continue attacking his flanks. Keep your health above 60% so a direct hit doesn’t immediately kill you.

He is weak to lightning and dark: Oceiros takes noticeably more damage from lightning and dark infused weapons. Apply Lightning Resin or use a lightning-infused weapon for a consistent damage boost across both phases. A faith build equivalent in DS3 — a Sacred Flame pyromancy build — also performs extremely well here.
→
Recommended level 55–65: Oceiros is found in the Consumed King’s Garden, a mid-game optional area. Arrive at Soul Level 55+ with a +7 or higher weapon. He hits hard but has a moderate health pool — a well-built character ends the fight quickly once you learn to stay behind him.
→
Estus between phases: when Oceiros drops to all fours to begin Phase 2 there is a brief animation — use this window to drink Estus and prepare for the increased aggression. He does not attack during the transition, giving you a reliable safe healing moment before Phase 2 begins in earnest.
→
Oceiros is required for the Path of the Dragon: after defeating Oceiros, the area behind his fog gate leads to a basement with the Path of the Dragon gesture — required to access Archdragon Peak. Always explore the room behind the boss arena after defeating him.
→
Use a summon sign at the fog gate: an NPC summon sign appears outside Oceiros’ fog gate — Hawkwood the Deserter can be summoned here. He is aggressive and draws Oceiros’ attention effectively in Phase 1, giving you free damage windows. He often dies in Phase 2 but the Phase 1 assistance is valuable.
Is Oceiros required to beat Dark Souls 3?
Oceiros is not required for the standard endings but is required if you want to access Archdragon Peak — the Path of the Dragon gesture is found in his boss arena. He is also strongly recommended as his arena connects to a path leading toward the Twin Princes and Grand Archives area.
Where is Oceiros in Dark Souls 3?
Oceiros is found in the Consumed King’s Garden, which is accessed via a lift in Lothric Castle near the Dragon Barracks area. The garden is filled with toxic enemies and leads to his fog gate at the far end of a large open courtyard.
What is Oceiros weak to in Dark Souls 3?
Oceiros is weak to lightning and dark damage. Applying Lightning Resin to your weapon before the fight gives a consistent damage increase across both phases. He has no particular resistance to physical damage, making standard infusions also effective.
How do I survive Oceiros’ Phase 2 charge?
When Oceiros lowers his head and begins accelerating toward you, sprint hard sideways — left or right — to exit the charge path entirely. The charge travels in a straight line and does not track once committed, so lateral movement always works. After he skids to a stop, sprint in and land 2–3 hits before his next attack.
