How to Beat Twin Princes in Dark Souls 3

⚡ Quick Answer
Focus Lorian first — he is the mobile melee twin. When he dies, Lothric revives him and the fight restarts with both princes fused. In Phase 2, stay aggressive on Lorian to keep pressure on both princes at once. The biggest threat is Lothric’s long-range magic — always close the gap immediately after Lorian teleports.
How to Beat Twin Princes
1
Understand the two phases. Phase 1 is Lorian alone — he teleports and swings a greatsword with fire. Phase 2 begins when Lorian dies and Lothric revives him by jumping onto his back. In Phase 2, both princes share a health bar and Lothric fires powerful homing soul spears from Lorian’s back. The fight ends only when you kill both simultaneously by depleting the shared health bar.
2
Phase 1 — bait Lorian’s teleport then punish. Lorian telegraphs his teleport with a brief kneel animation. When he disappears, immediately roll to your left — he almost always reappears behind you swinging right to left. After dodging, land 2–3 hits before he recovers. His wide horizontal sweeps are dodged by rolling into him, not away.
3
Phase 1 — dodge his fire slam. Lorian raises his sword overhead and slams it down in a large fire explosion. Roll through the slam at the last moment — the explosion has a delay after the sword hits. Rolling too early catches you in the blast. This is his hardest hitting attack and the most common cause of death in Phase 1.
4
Phase 2 — stay on Lorian, avoid Lothric’s spears. Lothric fires three homing soul spears that track you. Sprint in a wide circle to outrun them — they lose tracking after a few seconds and fly off harmlessly. Once the spears miss, close the gap on Lorian immediately and deal damage before Lothric fires again. Never stop moving in Phase 2.
5
Use Estus immediately after Lorian dies in Phase 1. There is a brief window while Lothric’s revival animation plays where neither prince attacks. Use this time to heal to full and consume any buff items before Phase 2 begins — this transition moment is the only guaranteed safe window in the entire fight.
Tips for the Twin Princes Fight
→
Use a fast weapon: Lorian has very short punish windows between his teleports and combos. A fast straight sword or curved sword lets you land 2–3 hits reliably. Slow weapons like ultra greatswords often only get 1 hit per opening.
→
Lightning resin or bundles: both princes have moderate lightning weakness. Apply Lightning Resin to your weapon before the fight for a consistent damage boost throughout both phases at minimal cost.
→
Stay medium distance in Phase 2: too close and Lothric fires his spears point blank — hard to dodge. Too far and Lorian teleports constantly. Stay at mid range to bait the teleport, dodge it, then close for a punish before backing off again.
→
Summon Gotthard: his summon sign appears outside the fog gate. Gotthard is an aggressive NPC summon who draws Lorian’s attention effectively, giving you free openings. His presence makes Phase 2 significantly easier by splitting Lothric’s spell targeting.
→
Recommended level: arrive at Soul Level 70–80 with a +8 or higher weapon. The Twin Princes are a late-game boss — coming in underlevelled makes the fight much harder than it needs to be due to Lothric’s one-shot spell potential at low health pools.
FAQ
Do you have to kill both Twin Princes at the same time?
Not simultaneously — but Lothric will keep reviving Lorian every time he dies until you deplete their shared health bar in Phase 2. In Phase 2 both princes share one health pool, so damage dealt to Lorian also reduces Lothric’s health. The fight ends when that shared bar reaches zero.
How do I avoid Lothric’s homing spears?
Sprint in a wide circle away from the spears — they lose tracking after travelling a certain distance and veer off harmlessly. Do not roll through them; the homing is too tight for roll frames to reliably avoid all three. Running in a wide arc is the most consistent method.
Where is the Twin Princes boss in Dark Souls 3?
The Twin Princes are found at the top of Lothric Castle, in the Grand Archives area. You must defeat the three Lords of Cinder — Abyss Watchers, Aldrich, and Yhorm — and place their cinders on the thrones in Firelink Shrine before the path to Lothric Castle fully opens.
What is the Twin Princes’ weakness in Dark Souls 3?
Both princes are weak to lightning damage. Lightning Resin on your weapon or a lightning-infused weapon will deal noticeably more damage. They also have moderate weakness to dark damage, making dark builds effective as well.
