⚡ Quick Answer

The best Charizard ex build in 2026 pairs it with Pidgeot ex as the engine — Pidgeot’s ability lets you search any card from your deck once per turn, giving the deck incredible consistency. The strategy is to set up Charizard ex fast, accelerate Fire Energy using Magma Basin and hit for 330+ damage per turn.

Full Deck List
Pokémon — 16 4 Charmander (OBF) 2 Charmeleon (OBF) 3 Charizard ex (OBF) 2 Pidgey (MEW) 2 Pidgeot ex (OBF) 1 Radiant Charizard (CRZ) 1 Mew ex (MEW) 1 Comfey (LOR)
Trainer — 32 4 Iono 3 Professor’s Research 2 Boss’s Orders 4 Ultra Ball 4 Rare Candy 3 Nest Ball 2 Super Rod 2 Lost Vacuum 2 Switch 2 Escape Rope 4 Magma Basin (Stadium)
Energy — 12 12 Basic Fire Energy
How the Deck Works
1 Set up Pidgeot ex first. Pidgeot’s «Quick Search» ability (once per turn, search any card from your deck) is the engine of the entire deck. Get Pidgey down on turn 1 and evolve it to Pidgeot ex as fast as possible using Rare Candy.
2 Use Magma Basin to accelerate Energy. Magma Basin lets you move a Fire Energy from your discard pile to any Benched Fire Pokémon once per turn (with 2 damage counters). This lets you power up Charizard ex faster than attaching one energy per turn manually.
3 Attack with Charizard ex for 330 damage. Charizard ex’s Burning Darkness attack does 180 base damage + 30 for each Prize card your opponent has taken. Against a 2-prize opponent with 4 prizes taken, that’s 300+ damage — enough to one-shot almost everything.
4 Use Radiant Charizard as a surprise attacker. Radiant Charizard costs less energy for each Prize your opponent has taken. In a desperate spot where Charizard ex is knocked out, Radiant Charizard can attack for just 1-2 energy and deal massive damage.
Tips
Always keep Rare Candy in hand for Pidgey — evolving to Pidgeot ex on turn 2 is the ideal line and requires Rare Candy + Pidgeot ex in hand.
Don’t discard Fire Energy unnecessarily early — Magma Basin needs Energy in the discard to function. Discard Energy with Professor’s Research deliberately.
Use Lost Vacuum to remove opponent’s stadiums that counter yours — Path to the Peak shuts off your Pidgeot ex ability and needs to be removed immediately.
Buy singles for this deck — the regular art Charizard ex costs a fraction of the special illustration version and plays identically.
Charizard ex has been one of the most consistent top-tier decks in the Pokémon TCG for several sets. The Pidgeot ex engine gives it a level of consistency that most other decks can’t match — being able to search any card every turn makes it very hard to brick. The main weakness is the setup requirement: if you can’t get Pidgeot ex or Charizard ex out quickly, the deck stalls. That’s why the 4 Rare Candy and 4 Ultra Ball counts are non-negotiable.
