Open the map (press minus/−), hover over any Shrine, Skyview Tower, town, or previously visited location with a fast travel icon and press A to travel there instantly. You must have physically visited a location at least once before it becomes a fast travel point. Fast travel is free, instant, and available at any time — except during certain scripted story sequences and inside dungeons.

How to Fast Travel — Step by Step
1 Press minus (−) to open the map from anywhere. Fast travel in TotK starts from the map screen. Press the minus button (−) on your Switch controller at any time while on foot, in the air, or on horseback — the map opens immediately. The map shows all of Hyrule with icons for every discovered location. Fast travel points show as specific icons: Shrine icons (green diamond), Skyview Tower icons (blue tower), and town/stable markers (various shapes). Navigate the map with the left stick, zoom in/out with ZL/ZR, and hover your cursor over any location with a fast travel marker. A prompt «Fast Travel (A)» appears — press A to instantly teleport there.
2 Unlock fast travel points by physically visiting them first. Fast travel is only available to locations you’ve already visited. A Shrine you haven’t entered yet does not appear as a fast travel point — you must find and enter it at least once. Similarly, stables, towns, and villages only become fast travel points after you’ve walked to them the first time. This creates a natural exploration loop: the more of Hyrule you explore physically, the larger your fast travel network becomes and the faster future exploration becomes. Prioritize activating Skyview Towers — they unlock large areas of the map automatically and show undiscovered Shrines in their region.
3 Skyview Towers are the most important fast travel unlocks — activate them early. There are 15 Skyview Towers spread across Hyrule, each covering a region of the map. Activating a tower does two things: unlocks it as a fast travel point AND reveals the map for its entire surrounding region (showing terrain, locations, and undiscovered Shrine markers). Towers are found at ground level — approach and interact with the terminal to launch Link into the sky and activate the tower. This aerial launch also gives an excellent gliding view of the region. Prioritise activating the Skyview Tower for each region before exploring it deeply — the revealed map makes exploration dramatically more efficient. All 15 towers are available from the start of the game.
4 Fast travel between Shrines is the most common use case — complete them for the network. With 152 Shrines spread across Hyrule (roughly one every 5–10 minutes of exploration), the Shrine network eventually forms a dense fast travel web that puts you within a short walk of almost any location. Early in the game, fast traveling to the nearest Shrine to a destination and then walking the rest is the standard efficient movement pattern. As you complete more Shrines, the gaps between fast travel points shrink. The best investment for improving your exploration speed: complete every Shrine you encounter immediately rather than saving them — each one adds a permanent node to your travel network.
5 Fast travel to Sky Islands — teleport to the nearest Shrine above, then glide. Sky Islands have their own Shrines but reaching them initially requires ascent via Skyview Tower launch, Zonai balloons, or Recall on falling rocks. Once you’ve entered a Sky Island Shrine at least once, you can fast travel directly to it — arriving on the island instantly. This makes revisiting Sky Islands for materials, treasure chests, or Korok Seeds trivially easy after the initial visit. The Temple of Time on the Great Sky Island is a permanent fast travel point unlocked during the tutorial — it’s the highest starting point on the map and useful for launching into wide glide approaches across central Hyrule.
6 When fast travel is blocked — alternative movement options. Fast travel is unavailable in specific situations: inside active dungeons (during the puzzle rooms), during certain scripted story cutscene moments, and when the game is in a state that doesn’t allow map access. In these cases you must complete the current section before fast travel re-enables. Outside these edge cases, fast travel is always available — even mid-fall, mid-swim, or while on horseback. If fast travel seems blocked unexpectedly, check if you’re in an area with a «You cannot use this here» restriction, then move slightly and try again. The map access button should respond in virtually all open-world states.
Fast Travel Tips
Activate all 15 Skyview Towers as your first exploration priority: towers reveal entire map regions, showing undiscovered Shrines, towns, and stables in that area. Activating all 15 towers early transforms navigation from guesswork into purposeful routing. Each tower takes 2–5 minutes to reach and activate — spend your first few hours of the game finding and activating towers before deep-diving any specific questline.
Use stables as fast travel points near horse storage and cooking: all 13 stables in Hyrule are fast travel points once visited. Each stable has a Cooking Pot (for making meals), a horse boarding facility, and usually a Shrine nearby. When planning a long journey, fast travel to the stable nearest your destination for the cooking pot before proceeding — it’s the most efficient way to stock up on meals without backtracking far.
Fast travel cancels falling damage — use it as an emergency escape: if Link is falling from a great height and you don’t have stamina to glide to safety, open the map quickly and fast travel to a nearby Shrine. The teleport happens instantly regardless of your falling state — you arrive at the Shrine with zero fall damage. This technique works in any open-world fall scenario and is faster than deploying the paraglider in many situations.
The Paraglider fast travel trick for early game: after getting the Paraglider from Purah at Lookout Landing (given automatically in the early story), fast travel to the Temple of Time on the Great Sky Island. From there, use the Paraglider to glide south toward any destination in central Hyrule — the altitude gives you enough glide distance to reach most of the central map without touching the ground. This bypasses the slow early-game ground travel before you have many Shrines unlocked.
Depths Lightroots mirror surface Shrine positions — activate them for Depths navigation: each of the 120 Lightroots in the Depths is positioned directly below a surface Shrine. Fast travelling to a Lightroot in the Depths teleports you to a specific underground location, enabling efficient Depths navigation identical to using surface Shrines. If you need to reach a specific Depths area, check the surface map for the nearest Shrine above that region, then fast travel to the corresponding Lightroot in the Depths map layer.
Fast travel in Tears of the Kingdom is more powerful than in most open-world games because of the vertical dimension — being able to teleport directly onto Sky Islands (via their Shrines) or deep into the Depths (via Lightroots) means movement is rarely purely horizontal. The optimal exploration rhythm is: activate Skyview Tower for a new region → follow the revealed map to nearby Shrines → complete each Shrine (unlocking it as a fast travel point and gaining a Light of Blessing for heart containers) → fast travel back to a town or stable to cook and sell before moving on. This loop means you’re constantly adding to your travel network while progressing through content, creating a virtuous cycle where exploration speed increases the more you explore.
