How to Get Gold in Stardew Valley

⚡ Quick Answer
Mine floors 80–120 of The Mines — Gold Ore nodes appear heavily in this range. Smelt 5 Gold Ore + 1 Coal in a furnace for 1 Gold Bar. Gold Ore also drops from Gold Geodes and Omni Geodes cracked at Clint’s, and is occasionally sold by the Blacksmith in later years.
How to Get Gold Ore and Gold Bars
1
Mine floors 80–120 of The Mines. Gold Ore nodes — bright yellow-orange rocks — appear from floor 80 onward and are most abundant between floors 80–120. Use the mine elevator to jump directly to floor 80 on repeat visits. Smash every rock on these floors as regular grey rocks occasionally drop Gold Ore too.
2
Upgrade your pickaxe before mining floor 80+. A Gold Pickaxe (5,000g + 5 Gold Bars at Clint’s) mines rocks in 1 swing on floor 80+, compared to 2–3 swings with lower tier tools. The faster you clear each floor the more Gold Ore you collect per energy point. Upgrade your pickaxe to at least Iron before attempting the 80s floors regularly.
3
Smelt Gold Ore into Gold Bars. Place Gold Ore in your furnace with Coal as fuel — 5 Gold Ore + 1 Coal = 1 Gold Bar in 5 in-game hours. Set up multiple furnaces to process large hauls simultaneously. Gold Bars take longer to smelt than Copper or Iron — start the furnaces before bed so they finish overnight.
4
Crack Gold Geodes and Omni Geodes at Clint’s. Gold Geodes (found on floors 80–120) and Omni Geodes both have a chance to contain Gold Ore. Crack every geode you find — the Gold Ore inside adds to your total without additional mining energy. Omni Geodes are particularly valuable as they can contain any mineral including Gold Ore.
5
Mine the Skull Cavern for Gold in bulk. The Skull Cavern in the Calico Desert has Gold Ore nodes throughout its early floors — often appearing alongside Iridium Ore deeper down. A single Skull Cavern run on a lucky day with Bombs can yield 50–100 Gold Ore alongside other resources, making it the most efficient mid-to-late game Gold source.
Gold Tips
→
Gold Bars are required for nearly every late-game upgrade: Gold Bars are needed for Gold tool upgrades, Quality Sprinklers, Farm Buildings upgrades, and many crafting recipes. You will need 30–60+ Gold Bars in Year 1–2 — prioritise floor 80–120 mining runs as soon as you have cleared the first 80 floors.
→
Lucky days boost Gold Ore drops: check the TV Fortune Teller every morning — high luck days significantly increase ore drop rates in The Mines and Skull Cavern. Schedule your floor 80–120 runs on good luck days for 20–30% more Gold Ore per energy spent. Bad luck days are better spent on farming or socialising.
→
Miner profession gives +1 ore per vein: the Miner profession at Mining level 5 adds +1 to every metal ore vein — every Gold Ore node drops one extra ore permanently. Over hundreds of mining sessions this compounds into hundreds of additional Gold Bars at no extra energy cost. Choose Miner at level 5 if you mine regularly.
→
Quality Sprinklers need 1 Gold Bar each: a Quality Sprinkler (waters 3×3 area) requires 1 Iron Bar, 1 Gold Bar, and 1 Refined Quartz. Building out a full sprinkler system for your farm in Year 1 Summer or Fall requires 20–40 Gold Bars — plan your mining sessions accordingly to have enough Gold Bars stockpiled before the next planting season.
→
5 hours to smelt — plan overnight: Gold Bars take 5 in-game hours to smelt — longer than Copper (0.5h) or Iron (2h). Load your furnaces with Gold Ore and Coal at the end of your day so they smelt while you sleep and are ready to collect first thing the next morning. Never waste active playtime waiting for Gold smelting.
FAQ
What floors have the most Gold in Stardew Valley?
Gold Ore is most abundant on floors 80–120 of The Mines. Use the mine elevator to jump directly to floor 80 on repeat visits. The Skull Cavern in the Calico Desert also contains Gold Ore throughout its early floors alongside Iridium Ore, making it excellent for bulk Gold collection in Year 2 and beyond.
How many Gold Ore do you need for one Gold Bar?
Smelting 1 Gold Bar requires 5 Gold Ore and 1 Coal in a furnace. The smelting process takes 5 in-game hours — longer than Copper or Iron bars. Running multiple furnaces simultaneously processes more bars per day. Load furnaces before sleeping so bars are ready to collect in the morning.
Can you buy Gold Ore in Stardew Valley?
Clint the Blacksmith sells Gold Ore for 400g per ore in later years. This is expensive for bulk quantities — a full Gold Bar costs 2,000g in purchased ore alone. Mining floors 80–120 remains far more cost-effective. The Traveling Cart may occasionally stock Gold Ore at similar prices.
What are Gold Bars used for in Stardew Valley?
Gold Bars are used to upgrade all tools to Gold level, craft Quality Sprinklers (water 3×3 area), build farm equipment like Kegs and Preserves Jars, and complete Community Center bundles. They are one of the most heavily used crafting materials in Year 1–2 alongside Iron Bars.
