How to Get Refined Quartz in Stardew Valley
Updated April 2026 · 2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
Refined Quartz is made by smelting 1 Quartz or 1 Fire Quartz in a Furnace — regular Quartz gives 1 Refined Quartz, Fire Quartz gives 3. Quartz is found in the Mines on floors 1–79 and Fire Quartz on floors 80–120. Refined Quartz is also a rare drop from Ghosts in the mines and can occasionally be found in Fishing Treasure Chests.
Step by Step
1
Collect Quartz from the Mines. Quartz appears as white crystal nodes on cave walls throughout floors 1–79 — break them with any Pickaxe to collect. They respawn each time you re-enter the mines so farm them on every mining trip. A single run through floors 1–40 typically yields 5–15 Quartz without specifically hunting for it.
2
Smelt Quartz in a Furnace. Place 1 Quartz in the top slot of a Furnace and 1 Coal in the fuel slot — smelting takes 1.5 in-game hours and produces 1 Refined Quartz. Run multiple Furnaces simultaneously to process large batches quickly. The recipe unlocks automatically — no level requirement needed.
3
Use Fire Quartz for triple output. Fire Quartz appears on floors 80–120 of the mines as red crystal nodes. Smelting 1 Fire Quartz produces 3 Refined Quartz — triple the yield of regular Quartz for the same fuel cost. Once you’ve reached the lower mine floors, prioritize Fire Quartz over regular Quartz for Refined Quartz production.
4
Farm Ghosts for direct drops. Ghosts are white floating enemies that appear in the mines on floors 51–79. They have a chance to drop Refined Quartz directly on death — no smelting required. This is a slower source but useful when you need Refined Quartz quickly and don’t have Quartz to smelt.
5
Check the Recycling Machine for free Refined Quartz. Place Broken CD or Broken Glasses (common Trash items from Crab Pots and Fishing) into a Recycling Machine — both have a chance to produce Refined Quartz as output. This turns otherwise worthless trash into a useful crafting material at zero cost.
Tips
→
Refined Quartz is needed for Lightning Rods and the Slime Hutch — Lightning Rods (5 Iron Bar + 1 Bat Wing + 1 Refined Quartz) protect your farm from lightning strikes and produce Battery Packs. The Slime Hutch requires 10 Refined Quartz. Both are important mid-game builds worth stockpiling for.
→
Battery Packs require Refined Quartz indirectly — Lightning Rods produce Battery Packs during storms, which are needed for Iridium Sprinklers and other late-game crafts. Building multiple Lightning Rods early means a steady Battery Pack supply without any active effort.
→
The Skull Cavern has abundant Fire Quartz — once you reach Skull Cavern in the Desert (requires Skull Key from floor 120 of the Mines) Fire Quartz nodes appear constantly. A single Skull Cavern run often yields 20–50 Fire Quartz, producing 60–150 Refined Quartz in one mining session.
→
Never sell Refined Quartz raw — it sells for only 50g each which is far below its crafting value. Always use it for Lightning Rods, Slime Hutch, or other recipes rather than shipping it directly.
