How to Make a Book in Minecraft
Updated April 2026 · 2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
Combine 3 Paper and 1 Leather anywhere in a crafting grid (no specific shape needed). Paper comes from 3 Sugar Cane in a row, and Leather drops from cows, horses, donkeys, or llamas. Books are essential for bookshelves and enchanting. If you’re building toward the full setup, see how to enchant items in Minecraft.
How to Craft a Book
1
Collect Sugar Cane — it grows naturally along riverbanks and beaches. You need 3 Sugar Cane per book (1 paper each), so plant a small farm early to keep a steady supply.
2
Craft Paper: place 3 Sugar Cane in a horizontal row anywhere in the crafting grid. This gives you 3 Paper — exactly what one book needs.
3
Get Leather by killing cows, horses, donkeys, llamas, or hoglins. Each mob drops 0–2 Leather. Cows are the easiest source — find a herd and breed them for a renewable supply. For the full setup, check how to breed animals in Minecraft.
4
Open the crafting table and place 3 Paper and 1 Leather anywhere in the grid — arrangement doesn’t matter. Collect the Book.
What Books Are Used For
1
Bookshelves — craft with 6 Planks + 3 Books. You need 15 bookshelves around your enchanting table to unlock level 30 enchantments.
2
Enchanted Books — put a plain book in the enchanting table to get a random enchanted book, which you can apply to tools via anvil. Great for saving enchantments you don’t need right now. This becomes much stronger once you know how to make an Anvil in Minecraft.
3
Book and Quill — combine a Book + Ink Sac + Feather to write notes in-game. Useful for coordinates, base notes, or labelling storage in multiplayer.
Tips
→
You need 45 books (135 Sugar Cane + 45 Leather) to craft all 15 bookshelves for max-level enchanting. Set up a Sugar Cane farm as early as possible.
→
Sugar Cane grows one block at a time up to 3 blocks tall. Place it next to water and it will grow automatically — no watering or tilling needed.
→
You can also get Leather by crafting 4 Rabbit Hide together at a crafting table — useful if cows are scarce in your biome.
→
Librarian villagers sometimes sell Bookshelves directly — a quick shortcut if you have emeralds but not enough Sugar Cane yet.
