Craft a Composter with 7 Wooden Slabs arranged in a U shape in a crafting table — three across the bottom, one on each side of the middle row, leaving the top row and center empty. Fill it by right-clicking with any plant-based item — seeds, crops, flowers, or food. After enough items are added a green layer appears and right-clicking collects 1 Bone Meal. Craft the Composter. Open a crafting table and place Slabs in a U shape — fill the entire bottom row (3 slabs), place one slab in the left slot of the middle row, one in the right slot of the middle row, and leave the top row and center empty. The Composter appears in the output slot.

Place it and fill it with plant items. Right-click the Composter with any compostable item — Seeds, Wheat, Carrots, Potatoes, Melons, Pumpkins, Leaves, Flowers, or any other plant-based material. Each item has a percentage chance of raising the compost level by one. The level indicator inside rises from 0 to 7.

Collect the Bone Meal. When the Composter reaches level 7 the inside turns bright green and a particle effect appears. Right-click it one more time to collect 1 Bone Meal — the Composter resets to level 0 and is ready to fill again immediately.

Automate with Hoppers. Place a Hopper feeding into the top of the Composter to supply plant items automatically, and another Hopper underneath connected to a Chest to collect Bone Meal. This turns excess crops and seeds from your farm into a passive Bone Meal generator that runs without any manual input, especially if you already have an automatic farm in Minecraft.
