How to Get to the Cathedral of the Deep in Dark Souls 3
Updated April 2026 · 3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
Defeat Crystal Sage at the end of the Road of Sacrifices — the door behind her fog gate leads directly into the Cathedral of the Deep. From the Crucifixion Woods bonfire, head north through the swamp and ruined structures to reach Crystal Sage’s arena.
How to Reach the Cathedral of the Deep
1
Progress from the Undead Settlement. The Cathedral of the Deep is accessed through the Road of Sacrifices — the area that follows the Undead Settlement. After defeating the Curse-Rotted Greatwood (optional) or simply progressing through the Undead Settlement, cross the bridge into the Road of Sacrifices and activate the first bonfire there.
2
Navigate the Road of Sacrifices to Crucifixion Woods. The Road of Sacrifices is a forested swamp area with Corvians, Crabs, and sorcerer enemies. Progress north through the area until you reach the Crucifixion Woods bonfire — a large open swamp area. Activate this bonfire as it serves as a key fast travel point for the whole region.
3
Find and defeat Crystal Sage. From the Crucifixion Woods, head north through the ruins — Crystal Sage’s fog gate is at the far end of the ruined building complex. Defeat Crystal Sage by staying in melee range and targeting the opaque version during her clone phase. The entire fight takes under 90 seconds with aggressive melee pressure.
4
Enter the Cathedral through the door behind Crystal Sage. After Crystal Sage falls, a large door opens behind her arena — walk through it to enter the Cathedral of the Deep. Activate the Cathedral of the Deep bonfire immediately just inside the entrance. The Cathedral is one of the game’s most complex areas with multiple floors, hidden passages, and two accessible boss fights.
5
Explore thoroughly before the boss. The Cathedral of the Deep contains the Deacons of the Deep as its main boss, plus the optional Giant in the rafters and Rosaria’s Fingers covenant area. Explore the entire Cathedral before triggering the boss — valuable items including the Deep Braille Divine Tome, Aldrich’s Sapphire, and estus shard are found throughout.
Cathedral of the Deep Tips
→
The Giant in the rafters is friendly — initially: a Giant sits in the Cathedral rafters shooting arrows at enemies. He is neutral toward you unless attacked — use his arrows to help clear Thralls and Cathedral Knights below. Later in his questline he becomes hostile, so interact with him carefully if you care about NPC questlines.
→
Cathedral Knights are the hardest standard enemies so far: the large armoured Cathedral Knights deal heavy damage and have significant poise. Fight them one at a time, use pillars to break their charge attacks, and never engage two simultaneously. A +5 or higher weapon makes them manageable — lower upgrades make them very dangerous.
→
Find the shortcut elevator early: a hidden elevator near the Cathedral’s entrance creates a shortcut between the bonfire and the deeper sections of the Cathedral. Finding it early saves enormous time on repeated runs if you die. Explore the left side of the Cathedral interior from the entrance bonfire to locate it quickly.
→
Recommended level 35–45: the Cathedral of the Deep is a mid-early game area. Arrive at Soul Level 35+ with a +5 or higher weapon. The Deacons of the Deep boss is one of the easiest in the game, but the journey through the Cathedral with its Thralls and Cathedral Knights is genuinely challenging at low levels.
→
Pick up the Deep Braille Divine Tome: this key item found in the Cathedral unlocks important miracles when given to Irina of Carim at Firelink Shrine — including Gnaw and Dorhys’ Gnawing for bleed/dark builds. Collect it during your Cathedral exploration regardless of your current build.
FAQ
How do you get to the Cathedral of the Deep in Dark Souls 3?
Progress through the Road of Sacrifices to Crucifixion Woods, then defeat Crystal Sage at the end of the ruined building complex. The door behind Crystal Sage’s fog gate opens after her defeat and leads directly into the Cathedral of the Deep entrance bonfire.
What is the boss of the Cathedral of the Deep?
The main boss is the Deacons of the Deep — a crowd of robed Deacons with a hidden Archdeacon target among them. It is one of the easiest required bosses in Dark Souls 3. Defeat the glowing red Archdeacon in the crowd to end the fight. The Cathedral also contains the optional Giant in the rafters as a secondary encounter.
Is the Cathedral of the Deep required in Dark Souls 3?
Yes — the Cathedral of the Deep is a required main story area. Defeating the Deacons of the Deep provides a Lord of Cinder soul needed for progression. The Cathedral runs parallel to the Farron Keep / Abyss Watchers branch — you need to complete both at some point to progress toward the game’s later areas.
What level should I be for the Cathedral of the Deep?
Soul Level 35–45 with a +5 or higher weapon is recommended. The Cathedral Knights are the main threat — they hit hard and have good poise. The Deacons boss itself is manageable at lower levels. If Cathedral Knights are killing you in 2–3 hits, consider levelling Vigor to 25+ before continuing.
