How to Beat Deacons of the Deep in Dark Souls 3
Updated April 2026 · 3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
Look for the glowing red Deacon in the crowd — that is the Archdeacon, the real target. Kill it to advance the fight. In Phase 2 a second Archdeacon appears surrounded by a fire barrier — kill the one holding the red glow. The rest of the Deacons are just obstacles; ignore them and focus entirely on the glowing target.
How to Beat Deacons of the Deep
1
Understand the fight mechanic. The Deacons of the Deep is a mob boss — a large crowd of robed enemies filling the Cathedral of the Deep’s main hall. Among them is an Archdeacon that glows red — this is your actual target. The other Deacons deal minor damage and exist only to slow you down. You cannot win by killing regular Deacons — find and kill the glowing one.
2
Scan the crowd for the red glow on entry. When you enter the fog gate, immediately look across the room for a Deacon with a bright red halo around it. It moves with the crowd but stands out clearly. Sprint directly toward it — do not stop to fight regular Deacons unless they are directly blocking your path.
3
Kill the glowing Archdeacon quickly. The red Archdeacon has moderate health — 3–5 hits from a decent weapon finishes it. As soon as it dies, the red glow transfers to a different Deacon nearby. This restarts the hunt. Repeat — find the new glowing target and kill it. Each time you kill the glowing Archdeacon the boss health bar decreases.
4
Phase 2 — fire barrier appears. At roughly 50% health, a large fire elemental appears around one of the Deacons — it forms a protective barrier of fire that damages you if you stand too close. The glowing red Archdeacon is now inside this barrier. Sprint in, land your hits quickly, and sprint back out before the fire damages you significantly. The barrier does not move with you — it stays around the Archdeacon.
5
Keep moving at all times. The biggest danger is being surrounded and cursed by Deacons. They cast a slow curse buildup in melee range. Keep moving through the crowd rather than standing still, use enough Estus to sustain through incidental damage, and prioritise target acquisition over fighting the mob.
Tips for Deacons of the Deep
→
This is the easiest main boss in the game: Deacons of the Deep is the most accessible mandatory boss in Dark Souls 3 — once you understand the red glow mechanic it becomes a straightforward sprint-and-kill exercise. Players who struggle are usually trying to kill all the Deacons rather than targeting only the glowing one.
→
Use a fast weapon: a straight sword or curved sword lets you kill the glowing Archdeacon in 2–3 hits and immediately start scanning for the next target. Slow weapons like ultra greatswords work but give the red glow more time to transfer while you wind up your attacks.
→
Fire resistance helps in Phase 2: the Phase 2 fire barrier deals consistent fire damage when you stand inside it. Equip the Fire Clutch Ring in reverse — actually avoid it — or bring a few Estus flasks dedicated to recovering fire damage. A Lloyd’s Talisman can also temporarily pacify nearby Deacons.
→
Sprint through the crowd: the regular Deacons deal very little damage individually. Sprint through them rather than engaging — you take minor chip damage but reach the glowing target much faster. Standing still to fight the crowd is the main reason players die to this otherwise straightforward boss.
→
Reward: Small Doll for Irithyll: defeating the Deacons drops the Small Doll — the key item required to pass through the invisible barrier at the entrance to Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. This is a required boss for story progression and unlocks one of the game’s most beautiful areas.
FAQ
How do you know which Deacon to kill?
The Archdeacon you need to kill always has a bright red glowing halo around it — it stands out clearly from the rest of the crowd. Look for the red glow on entry and sprint directly to it. When it dies the glow transfers to a different Deacon nearby — scan the crowd again and repeat.
What does the Deacons of the Deep boss drop?
Defeating the Deacons drops the Small Doll — a key item required to pass through the magical barrier at the entrance to Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. Without it you cannot progress to Irithyll, making the Deacons a required main story boss.
Why am I getting cursed by the Deacons?
Some Deacons cast a curse buildup aura at close range. Standing still in the crowd for too long accumulates curse, which can kill you instantly if the bar fills. Keep moving through the crowd and avoid lingering near groups of Deacons — your goal is to find and kill the glowing target as fast as possible, not fight the mob.
Is the Deacons of the Deep boss required in Dark Souls 3?
Yes — Deacons of the Deep is a required main story boss. Defeating them drops the Small Doll needed to enter Irithyll of the Boreal Valley, which leads to Aldrich and eventually the game’s later areas. You cannot complete the main story without killing the Deacons.
