How to Unlock All Spells in Hogwarts Legacy
How to Unlock Every Spell — Step by StepSpell Unlock TipsGetting all 34 spells in Hogwarts Legacy requires one deliberate choice (not turning in Sebastian) and consistent engagement with professor assignments throughout the game. Players who rush the main story without checking assignments frequently find themselves missing several combat spells that would have made earlier encounters much easier — Bombarda and Diffindo in particular are game-changing when unlocked early but easily missed if assignment completion is ignored. The most efficient approach: check assignments after every 2–3 main story missions, complete the combat spell requirements during exploration rather than grinding them separately, and advance Sebastian’s questline in parallel with the main story rather than leaving it until late game when Avada Kedavra feels less essential. For how to use all unlocked spells most effectively in combat, the best spells guide covers optimal combinations, cooldown management, and which Talents to prioritize for each spell type.

1
Complete all professor assignments — this unlocks the majority of combat spells. Most of the best combat spells are locked behind professor assignments, not the main story. Each professor has 1–2 assignments that require completing specific tasks (using a spell a set number of times, collecting ingredients, reaching locations) before they teach you the next spell. Check your assignments tab regularly — completed assignments unlock immediately. Priority order for combat: Professor Sharp (Depulso → Diffindo), Professor Hecat (Incendio → Expelliarmus), Professor Howin (Glacius → Bombarda). These six spells form the backbone of effective combat and should be unlocked as fast as possible.
2
Professor Sharp’s assignments — most impactful for combat. Sharp teaches Depulso (Assignment 1) and Diffindo (Assignment 2) — two of the best combat spells in the game. Assignment 1 requires: use Accio 5 times in combat, use Expelliarmus 5 times, buy 1 Focus Potion from J. Pippin’s Potions. Assignment 2 requires: use Depulso 5 times in combat, use Wingardium Leviosa 5 times, brew or buy an Edurus Potion. Both assignments are available early in the game — complete them as your first priority after unlocking Accio and Levioso from the main story.
3
Professor Hecat’s assignments — unlocks Incendio and Expelliarmus. Hecat teaches Incendio (Assignment 1) and Expelliarmus (Assignment 2). Assignment 1 requires: dodge 10 enemy attacks, use Incendio — wait, that’s circular… Hecat’s Assignment 1 requires attending her class and dodging during combat exercises. Assignment 2 requires: use Incendio 5 times, avoid taking damage for a set number of encounters. Incendio is essential for breaking red shields and setting enemies on fire. Expelliarmus unlocks the healing talent that makes it a passive recovery tool when upgraded — do these assignments before mid-game.
4
The three Unforgivable Curses — Sebastian Sallow’s questline (missable). Crucio, Imperio, and Avada Kedavra are all taught by Sebastian Sallow during his companion questline. Each spell has a specific quest where Sebastian offers to teach it — you must choose to accept each time or permanently lose that spell for the playthrough. The quests in order: «In the Shadow of the Study» (Crucio), «In the Shadow of Time» (Imperio), «In the Shadow of the Relic» (Avada Kedavra). To access all three, do NOT turn Sebastian in to the authorities if given the option — choosing to report him ends his questline and locks out the remaining Unforgivables. See the full Unforgivable Curses guide for the exact dialogue choices.
5
Remaining spells — Howin, Kogawa, Onai, Ronen, Garlick, Weasley. The remaining spells come from other professors’ assignments. Professor Howin: Glacius (Assignment 1 — freeze enemies) and Bombarda (Assignment 2 — AoE explosion). Professor Kogawa: Arresto Momentum (slow spell — useful for flying enemies). Professor Onai: Descendo (slam spell — good for clearing Spiders). Professor Ronen: Flipendo (knockback flip — situational). Professor Garlick: Wingardium Leviosa (Assignment 1) and Mandrake/Chinese Chomping Cabbage plant usage. Professor Weasley: Transfiguration spells for furniture and decorating — not combat-focused but required for room customization.
6
Alohomora — unlock all levels for every door in the game. Alohomora is unlocked through the main story quest «The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament» — Gladwin Moon teaches it to you in exchange for returning Demiguise Moon statues. The base level opens Level 1 locks. Collecting more Demiguise Statues (given to Moon) upgrades Alohomora to Level 2 (10 statues) and Level 3 (22 statues). Maximum Alohomora level is required to open every locked door and chest in the game — many contain gear upgrades, collectibles, and large amounts of gold. Collect Demiguise Statues throughout your playthrough rather than grinding them at endgame.
→Do NOT turn Sebastian in — it locks out two Unforgivables: late in Sebastian’s questline, you’re given the option to report him to the Underbelly authorities for his actions. If you do, the questline ends and you permanently lose access to Imperio and Avada Kedavra on that playthrough. Choosing «I won’t turn you in» keeps the questline active and lets you unlock all three Unforgivables. There are no negative gameplay consequences for keeping Sebastian’s secret — only positive dialogue outcomes and spell access.
→Professor assignments stack — complete the first to unlock the second: each professor has Assignment 1 and Assignment 2 — you must complete Assignment 1 before Assignment 2 becomes available. Don’t wait until mid or late game to start them. Assignment requirements (using specific spells X times, collecting potions) are easy to complete naturally during regular exploration — just be deliberate about using the required spell during combat and the counter fills passively.
→Spells learned don’t expire — you always keep every spell unlocked: once unlocked, spells are permanent. There’s no system where spells are lost or need re-unlocking. The only concern is not unlocking them in the first place (especially the Unforgivables). After completing all assignments and Sebastian’s quest, every spell is available for the rest of the playthrough with no maintenance required.
→Use the Field Guide pages to track assignment progress: open your Field Guide (pause menu) → Assignments tab to see exactly which assignments are complete, in progress, and locked. Each assignment shows exactly what’s needed — number of spell uses remaining, items to collect, locations to visit. Checking this weekly during your playthrough ensures you never accidentally miss an assignment window before moving too far in the story.
→Transfiguration spells are separate from combat spells — don’t confuse them: Professor Weasley teaches Transfiguration spells (Evanesco, Conjuring spell, Altering spells) used for Room of Requirement decoration and item transformation. These don’t appear in combat spell slots but are used in the decoration interface. All are unlocked automatically through Weasley’s classes with no assignment requirements — just attend the classes as they’re offered during the main story.
