How to Make an Anvil in Minecraft
Updated April 2026 · 2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
Place 3 Iron Blocks on the top row and 4 Iron Ingots (1 center, 3 bottom row) on a crafting table. You need 31 iron ingots total — 27 for the blocks and 4 loose. The anvil lets you repair and rename items and apply enchantments from books. To use it properly, you’ll also want how to get XP fast in Minecraft.
What You Need
1
Mine at least 31 Iron Ore. Iron spawns between Y=16 and Y=232 — the highest concentration is around Y=16 near caves and mountains.
2
Smelt all iron ore in a furnace to get 31 Iron Ingots.
3
Craft 3 Iron Blocks: fill a 3×3 crafting grid with 9 ingots each — repeat 3 times. This uses 27 of your 31 ingots.
4
Open the crafting table and place the 3 Iron Blocks across the top row, 1 Iron Ingot in the center cell, and 3 Iron Ingots across the bottom row. Leave the middle row’s left and right cells empty.
5
Collect the anvil and place it anywhere. Right-click to open — it costs XP levels to use, so have levels ready. If you’re low on levels, start with how to get XP fast in Minecraft.
Tips
→
Anvils degrade with use — after enough operations they become Chipped, then Damaged, and finally break. Keep iron stocked to craft replacements.
→
The «Too Expensive» message appears when an item has been repaired or enchanted too many times. The cost cap is 39 XP levels per operation.
→
Anvils also work as a trap — they fall with gravity and deal up to 20 hearts of damage to mobs or players below. Useful for creative traps.
→
To apply an enchantment from a book, put your item in the left slot and the Enchanted Book in the right slot. The result shows the merged item with its XP cost. This is the core follow-up to how to enchant items in Minecraft.
