How to Beat Margit the Fell Omen in Elden Ring
How to Beat Margit — Step by StepMargit TipsMargit is one of game design’s finest tutorial bosses — he looks like a mid-game difficulty spike but is actually a carefully constructed lesson in Elden Ring’s core combat philosophy. Every attack he has teaches a specific mechanic: the delayed hammer teaches late dodging, the dagger throws teach reading telegraphs rather than reacting to startup, the long combo strings teach that not every hit requires a response. Players who approach Margit as a learning opportunity rather than an obstacle consistently improve faster across the entire game. The Margit’s Shackle is the game’s way of acknowledging that the fight has a steep learning curve — it’s an optional tool that reduces the punishment for still-learning players while remaining entirely optional for those who want the pure experience. After Margit, the early weapon guide covers the best equipment for the rest of Stormveil Castle, and the early armor guide covers what to upgrade from castle loot before the next major boss.FAQ
⚡ Quick Answer
Margit — Boss Stats & Key InfoDodge toward his right side (your left) on every combo — most of Margit’s attacks angle right, so sidestepping left puts you behind him for free hits. Use Margit’s Shackle (bought from Patches for 5,000 Runes) to pin him twice in Phase 1 for free damage. Recommended level: 20–25. His biggest threat is the delayed golden hammer — dodge late, not early. Summon Sorcerer Rogier from the sign near the fog gate to split aggro.
| Stat | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Stormhill — Stormveil Castle entrance | Required boss to reach Stormveil |
| Recommended Level | 20–25 | Level 15 doable with skill |
| HP (NG) | ~3,500 | Phase 2 at ~55% HP |
| Weakness | Bleed, Frost | No major elemental weakness |
| Parryable? | ✅ Yes — most attacks | Hard but high reward |
| Margit’s Shackle | Pins him for ~5 seconds ×2 | Buy from Patches — 5,000 Runes |
| Reward | Talisman Pouch + 12,000 Runes | Extra talisman slot — very valuable |
1
Prepare — level up and get Margit’s Shackle. Margit is the first real skill-check boss in Elden Ring. Before attempting, reach at least level 20 and upgrade your weapon to +3 or higher. More importantly, find Patches in Murkwater Cave (north of Agheel Lake in Limgrave) — after his event, he sells Margit’s Shackle for 5,000 Runes. This item pins Margit to the ground for approximately 5 seconds when used — it works twice per fight during Phase 1 only. Each use is a free 3–5 hit window with no risk. Summon Sorcerer Rogier whose summon sign appears just before the fog gate — he distracts Margit and absorbs some hits.
2
Phase 1 — stay on his right side and dodge into attacks. The core positioning rule: stay to Margit’s right side (your left as you face him). His cane swings and dagger combos mostly travel rightward — staying left keeps you outside most attack arcs. When he begins a combo, dodge toward him and left rather than backing away. Backing up is the most common mistake — Margit’s reach is enormous and he’ll catch you mid-run. His safe punish windows are after his two-hit cane combo (1–2 hits) and after his jumping slam (2–3 hits during recovery).
3
The delayed golden hammer — dodge LATE. Margit’s most dangerous attack is the golden spectral hammer he conjures overhead and slams down with a significant delay. Most players dodge too early and get hit during the delay. The correct timing: wait until the hammer is approximately halfway through its downswing before rolling. This feels uncomfortably late but is the correct window. He also throws the hammer horizontally as a ranged attack — dodge toward him (not sideways) to step inside the arc. Once you read these two hammer attacks, Phase 1 becomes significantly more manageable.
4
Use Margit’s Shackle twice in Phase 1 for free damage. Equip Margit’s Shackle in your quick-access pouch or item slot. When Margit is standing still or beginning a combo, use it — he freezes in place for about 5 seconds. Attack freely during this window (aim for 3–5 hits with a medium weapon). Save both uses for Phase 1. The Shackle does not work after Phase 2 begins (around 55% HP when he jumps back and roars). Use it early in Phase 1 for the first time, then again once your Shackle cooldown clears.
5
Phase 2 — dagger rain and new combos, same positioning. At approximately 55% HP, Margit leaps back and roars, entering Phase 2. He gains new attacks: spectral dagger throws (3 daggers in sequence — dodge toward him between each), a longer 4-hit cane combo, and more frequent hammer throws. The same positioning principle applies — stay on his right. The dagger rain is his scariest new attack: he throws multiple daggers that fall from above in a spread pattern. Sprint away when you see him begin this — don’t try to roll each dagger individually.
6
Spirit Ashes and Rogier as aggro management. If you’re struggling, summon both Sorcerer Rogier (from the sign near the fog gate) and a Spirit Ash (Lone Wolf Ashes from Merchant Kalé are excellent for this fight — three wolves split Margit’s attention). With Rogier and the wolves, Margit cycles between multiple targets — this creates consistent openings where his back is turned to you. Fully focus on positioning and safe punishes rather than trying to win through damage alone. Many players beat Margit on their first attempt after adding Rogier to a run they’d been doing solo.

You don’t have to fight Margit to progress — you can skip him temporarily: Margit guards the main gate to Stormveil Castle, but there is a hidden side path into Stormveil that bypasses him entirely. Talk to Nepheli Loux or find the broken wall entrance on the left side of the Stormveil approach. This lets you explore the castle, collect gear, and level up further before returning to defeat Margit. Many players find the fight significantly easier at level 30+ with better equipment from the castle itself.

Bleed weapons accelerate the fight significantly: Margit is susceptible to Bleed. A weapon with native bleed (Uchigatana from the Samurai starting class) or a weapon infused with Blood Grease (craftable from Beast Blood) procs Bleed in 4–5 hits and instantly removes approximately 15% of Margit’s HP. Two or three Bleed procs in Phase 1 effectively eliminates the fight’s difficulty by rushing him to Phase 2 before his most dangerous Phase 1 combos appear frequently.

Flask of Wondrous Physick — use Crimson Crystal Tear before the fight: craft a Flask of Wondrous Physick by finding two Crystal Tears — the Crimson Crystal Tear (adds a large one-time HP restore) is found near the Third Church of Marika in Limgrave. Mix it with any second tear and use the Flask just before entering the fog gate. The instant HP refill effectively gives you an extra flask use at the most stressful point of the fight.
→
The Talisman Pouch reward is extremely valuable — don’t skip this fight: Margit drops the Talisman Pouch on death, which adds a second talisman slot (you start with one). This effectively doubles your talisman build options and is one of the most impactful early-game rewards in Elden Ring. Skipping Margit via the side path is fine for exploration, but return to defeat him before progressing too far — the extra talisman slot pays dividends for the entire game.

Margit reappears later as Morgott — the rematch in Leyndell: Margit and Morgott, the Omen King (a required boss in Leyndell, Royal Capital) are the same character. Morgott is significantly stronger but uses the same attack patterns — every dodge timing and positioning principle you learn on Margit directly transfers. Players who learned Margit thoroughly consistently find Morgott much easier than players who brute-forced Margit with summons and Shackle without internalizing the patterns.
What level should I be to fight Margit in Elden Ring?
The recommended level for Margit is 20–25. Level 15 is doable for skilled players. Weapon upgrade level matters as much as character level — aim for a +3 weapon minimum. If you’re struggling at recommended level, explore Limgrave fully before attempting — there are multiple weapon and upgrade stone locations that dramatically improve your damage output.
How do you dodge Margit’s golden hammer in Elden Ring?
Dodge late — wait until the hammer is about halfway through its downswing before rolling. Most players dodge too early and get caught by the delayed impact. For the horizontal hammer throw, dodge toward Margit rather than sideways to step inside the projectile’s arc. Learning these two timings is the key to Phase 1.
Where do you get Margit’s Shackle in Elden Ring?
Buy it from Patches for 5,000 Runes. Find Patches in Murkwater Cave north of Agheel Lake in Limgrave — trigger his event, choose not to attack him, and he sets up as a merchant. Margit’s Shackle pins Margit for ~5 seconds and works twice per fight, but only during Phase 1 (above ~55% HP).
Can you skip Margit in Elden Ring?
Yes — there is a hidden side entrance into Stormveil Castle that bypasses Margit entirely. Look for a broken section of wall on the left side of the Stormveil approach, or talk to Nepheli Loux for a hint. However, Margit drops the Talisman Pouch (second talisman slot) on death — this reward is valuable enough that returning to beat him after leveling up in the castle is strongly recommended.
