Coal is your most essential early resource — without it you can’t make torches or fuel your Furnace efficiently. The good news is it’s by far the most common ore in the game and practically impossible to miss — cliff faces, cave walls, and hillsides are covered in it. Within the first 10 minutes of any new world you should have enough coal for dozens of torches and hours of smelting. If you’re somehow short, switch to Charcoal from smelted logs as a reliable bridge.

Coal Ore spawns throughout almost the entire underground — from Y=256 down to Y=−1 — with the highest concentration between Y=96 and Y=136. It’s also exposed on cliff faces and mountain sides above ground. Look for the grey stone blocks with black speckles. Mine with any pickaxe and it drops Coal directly — no smelting required.
