⚡ Quick Answer

Repair the Bus Stop by completing the Vault bundle in the Community Center (requires 42,500g total across four bundles) or by purchasing the Bus Repair from the Joja Community Development Form for 40,000g. Once repaired, take the bus from the Bus Stop area west of your farm — it runs daily from 10am to 5pm for 500g per trip.

How to Unlock the Desert
1 Choose your path: Community Center route — complete the Vault bundles (2,500g + 5,000g + 10,000g + 25,000g) to repair the bus as part of restoring the Community Center. Or Joja route — buy the Joja membership and pay 40,000g directly for the bus repair project.
2 Once the bus is repaired, head to the Bus Stop — the area just west of your farm, past the entrance to Pelican Town. You’ll see the bus and Pam standing by it from 10am onwards on any non-rainy day.
3 Talk to Pam at the bus and pay 500g for a ticket. The bus departs and drops you at Calico Desert — a new area with its own shop, mine, and unique content.
4 To return, interact with the bus parked in the desert — it’s in the top-left corner of the map. The last bus back leaves at 5pm, so manage your time carefully or you’ll be sent home automatically at 2am and lose energy.
What to Do in the Desert
Sandy’s shop sells rare seeds including the Rare Seed (produces Sweet Gem Berry, the most valuable crop in the game) and exotic items not available elsewhere. Visit every day it’s open for a chance at the Rare Seed.
The Skull Cavern is the desert’s dungeon — an infinitely deep mine full of Iridium Ore and Prismatic Shards. Bring bombs, lots of food, and your best weapon. There is no elevator, so every visit starts at floor 1.
Calico Jack (1.6 update) — the casino inside the Oasis is unlocked after completing Mr Qi’s questline. Spend Qi Coins on exclusive furniture, wallpaper, and clothing items.
The desert also spawns Coconut and Cactus Fruit on the ground — free forage items worth collecting on every visit, especially useful for gifting villagers.
The Vault bundles are a natural milestone to work towards in Year 1 — saving 42,500g across spring and summer is very achievable with good crop planning. Unlocking the desert by early Year 2 gives you access to Skull Cavern’s Iridium Ore just when you need it most for tool upgrades and Sprinkler crafting. More Stardew Valley guides
