⚡ Quick Answer

The best way to get a Prismatic Shard is by mining Iridium Nodes in Skull Cavern — they have a 4% drop chance per node. Reach deep floors fast by bringing Staircases, bombs, and lots of food. The deeper you go, the more Iridium Nodes spawn. Most players find their first shard between floors 50–100.

How to Farm Prismatic Shards
1 Unlock Skull Cavern first — repair the bus to reach Calico Desert, then find the Skull Key on floor 120 of the regular Mines. The Skull Cavern entrance is in the northwest corner of the desert.
2 Prepare your inventory before each run: bring 10–15 Staircases (crafted from 99 Stone each), 15–20 Bombs or Mega Bombs, a stack of the best food you have (Spicy Eel, Pumpkin Soup, or Fried Egg in bulk), and your best pickaxe — Iridium Pickaxe if available.
3 Skip floors aggressively using Staircases — place one to drop a level instantly instead of mining a ladder. The goal is to reach floor 50+ as fast as possible, where Iridium Node density increases significantly.
4 On floors with dense Iridium Node clusters, use Bombs to break multiple nodes at once rather than mining them individually. Each exploded node still has a chance to drop a Prismatic Shard.
5 Eat food to keep health above 50% at all times — Skull Cavern enemies hit hard and dying ends your run. Prioritise survival over speed when health gets low, and retreat to a safe floor to recover if needed.
Other Sources and Uses
Treasure Rooms in Skull Cavern (the glowing staircase floors) have a chance to contain a Prismatic Shard chest — always enter these when you find them.
Omni Geodes have a very small chance of containing one. Not a reliable farm method but worth cracking open any you accumulate.
The primary use is dyeing your clothing any colour at Emily’s sewing machine — a Prismatic Shard produces a shifting rainbow dye. It’s also needed for the Museum donation collection and counts as a universally loved gift (worth 1,120g if sold, but don’t sell it).
The Lucky Lunch food (+3 Luck) and a high-Luck day (check the Fortune Teller on TV each morning) significantly increase your Iridium Node find rate — plan your best Skull Cavern runs on lucky days.
The Staircase strategy is the most reliable method for new Skull Cavern runners — it takes the RNG out of ladder hunting and lets you control your depth. Craft 15–20 Staircases the night before a run using Stone from the Quarry or regular Mines, and you’ll reliably reach floor 80–100 in a single day, which is deep enough to find multiple Iridium Nodes per floor.
