How to Beat Godrick the Grafted in Elden Ring
Updated April 2026 · Boss guide · 3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
To beat Godrick the Grafted in Elden Ring, summon Nepheli Loux at the fog gate, stay close to his left side, and punish only after his combos end. In Phase 2, roll toward his dragon fire instead of away from it. A safe recommended level is 35-40 with a weapon upgraded to at least +3 or +4.
How to Beat Godrick Step by Step
1
Reach around level 35-40 before the fight. Godrick is much easier if you come in with a few extra levels, enough Vigor, and a properly upgraded weapon. If you need more runes first, use an early farming route or check this guide on how to level up fast in Elden Ring.
2
Summon Nepheli Loux before entering. Her gold summon sign appears just outside the fog gate on the left side. She is one of the best NPC summons in the early game because she splits aggro and creates long openings for free damage.
3
Stay close to Godrick’s left side. Many of his axe swings and follow-up attacks are easier to avoid from that angle. This position also gives you safer punish windows after his slower combo finishers.
4
Attack only after his combo finishers. Godrick often chains together multiple swings and slams, but he leaves a short recovery window at the end. Land 1-2 hits, then reset your position immediately. Most deaths in this fight come from greed.
5
At around 50% HP, Godrick enters Phase 2. He grafts a dragon head onto his arm and gains fire attacks with much wider coverage. If he sweeps fire across the ground, move sideways. If the fire is aimed directly at you, roll toward him to get underneath the attack instead of backing away into the flames.
6
Watch for delayed slam timings. Like several early Elden Ring bosses, Godrick delays some of his biggest hits to catch panic rolls. Wait an extra beat before dodging. If you already learned this against Margit, the timing principle is very similar here.
Godrick Tips
→
Bleed weapons like the Uchigatana are extremely effective here because Godrick can be pressured hard in both phases. If you still need a weapon upgrade first, check the best early weapons in Elden Ring for beginners.
→
You can use Spirit Ashes alongside Nepheli Loux, which makes this fight much easier by overwhelming Godrick’s targeting. Even basic summons like Lone Wolf Ashes are enough to create extra openings.
→
Upgrade your main weapon to at least +3 or +4 before fighting Godrick. Raw damage matters a lot here, especially once Phase 2 begins and his openings become shorter.
→
After the fight, Godrick drops his Great Rune and unlocks a major progression step. Activating his Great Rune at the Limgrave Divine Tower gives you one of the best early stat boosts in the game.
