How to Find a Desert Temple in Minecraft
Updated April 2026 · 2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
Desert Temples spawn randomly in Desert biomes — travel through deserts and look for the large sandstone pyramid structure. Use the command /locate structure desert_pyramid in Java Edition to get exact coordinates instantly. Inside, there are 4 buried chests under the floor with loot — but a pressure plate TNT trap will kill you if you step on it. Dig down the side wall to reach the chests safely.
How to Find and Loot a Desert Temple
1
Find a Desert biome — travel away from your spawn in any direction until the terrain turns to sand. Deserts are common biomes and often border Savannas or Badlands. Riding a horse or using a Map makes the search faster.
2
Look for the pyramid shape on the horizon — Desert Temples are large structures made of Sandstone and Cut Sandstone with a distinctive striped pattern and two towers flanking a main entrance. They’re visible from a long distance on flat desert terrain.
3
In Java Edition, use /locate structure desert_pyramid in chat to get the nearest coordinates instantly. In Bedrock Edition, use /locate structure desert_temple. This works even without cheats enabled if you’re the world owner.
4
Enter the temple and find the central chamber floor — there’s a blue terracotta tile in the middle with a pressure plate hidden on it. Do NOT step on this — it triggers 9 blocks of TNT below that destroys the chests and kills you.
5
To loot safely: dig down through the side wall of the central chamber, bypassing the pressure plate entirely, or carefully break the pressure plate first using a stick before stepping near it. Then dig down to the hidden room with 4 chests arranged in a cross pattern.
6
Loot all 4 chests — common finds include Gold, Iron, Bones, Rotten Flesh, and Enchanted Books. Rare drops include Diamonds, Emeralds, Horse Armour, and Saddles. The loot pool is randomised each world.
Tips
→
After looting, mine the sandstone blocks from the temple itself — it’s a large free source of Sandstone, Sand, and Chiselled Sandstone that’s useful for building.
→
Desert Temples often generate near Desert Villages — if you spot a village, explore the surrounding desert for a temple nearby. The two structures frequently co-generate close together.
→
Temples can spawn partially buried in sand — if you see just the top of a pyramid poking out, dig around it to find the entrance. The loot room is always at the same depth regardless of how much of the structure is buried.
→
A Saddle is one of the possible rare drops from Desert Temple chests — one of the few ways to obtain one without trading with villagers or fishing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Desert Temples spawn in Badlands biomes?
No — Desert Temples only generate in Desert biomes. Badlands (Mesa) biomes have their own structure called the Mineshaft. If you’re in a Badlands, look for a Desert adjacent to it instead.
What is the rarest loot in a Desert Temple?
Diamonds and high-level Enchanted Books are the rarest and most valuable drops. Each chest has a small chance of containing 1–3 Diamonds, making temples worth visiting even in late game.
Can I loot a Desert Temple more than once?
No — each Desert Temple only generates its loot once per world. Once you’ve emptied the chests, they stay empty. You need to find new temples in unexplored desert areas for more loot.
What happens if I trigger the TNT trap?
Nine blocks of TNT detonate beneath the floor, destroying all four chests and their contents and almost certainly killing you. Always neutralise the pressure plate or dig around it before going near the central tile.
