How to Get Blaze Rods in Minecraft
Updated April 2026 · 2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
Blaze Rods drop exclusively from Blazes — the flying fire mobs found inside Nether Fortresses. Each Blaze drops 0–1 Blaze Rod on death (Looting III raises it to 0–4). You need to build a Nether Portal, find a fortress, and kill Blazes near their spawners. Collect at least 6 rods on your first trip — you need them for both the Brewing Stand and Blaze Powder fuel.
How to Farm Blaze Rods
1
Build a Nether Portal using at least 10 Obsidian and a Flint and Steel. Enter the Nether and note your portal coordinates — getting lost in the Nether is a common mistake on a first visit.
2
Find a Nether Fortress — the large dark brick structures with corridors and bridges. Travel in a straight line along the X or Z axis (not diagonally). Fortresses generate in north-south bands roughly every 200 blocks along the X axis.
3
Locate a Blaze Spawner inside the fortress — they appear on raised platforms or inside corridor rooms. Blazes also spawn naturally throughout the fortress at light level 11 or below.
4
Kill Blazes with a sword or bow. Blazes shoot fireballs in bursts of three — dodge or block with a shield between volleys. Snowballs deal 3 damage each and are very effective at range if you have them.
5
Collect at least 6–10 Blaze Rods before leaving — you need 1 for the Brewing Stand craft, plus several more converted into Blaze Powder to fuel it. More rods = more potions brewed.
Tips
→
Use Looting III on your sword — it increases the Blaze Rod drop chance significantly, up to 4 per kill instead of 1. Worth enchanting before your first fortress trip.
→
Bring Fire Resistance potions if you have them — Blaze fireballs set you on fire which stacks extra damage over time. Even one potion makes the fight dramatically safer.
→
Build a simple Blaze farm around the spawner — enclose the platform with walls, leave a gap to hit through, and funnel Blazes into a kill zone. Passive Blaze Rod income for the rest of your world.
→
Blaze Powder (crafted from 1 Blaze Rod → 2 Powder) is also needed for Eyes of Ender to locate the Stronghold. Stock up on rods early so you have enough for both potions and the End portal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Blazes drop rods when killed by fire or lava?
No — Blazes must be killed directly by a player (sword, bow, snowball, etc.) to drop Blaze Rods. Environmental deaths like lava or fall damage do not trigger drops.
What are Blaze Rods used for?
Blaze Rods are used to craft the Brewing Stand, and converted into Blaze Powder (2 per rod) which fuels it. Blaze Powder is also combined with Ender Pearls to make Eyes of Ender, required to find and activate the End Portal.
How do I find a Nether Fortress faster?
Walk in a straight line along the X axis (east or west). Fortresses generate in bands every ~200 blocks in this direction. Avoid travelling diagonally — you can pass between fortresses without ever finding one that way.
Do Blazes spawn outside of Nether Fortresses?
No — Blazes only spawn naturally inside Nether Fortresses. They do not appear in other Nether biomes. If you’re not finding any, make sure you’re inside the fortress structure itself, not just near it.
