How to Make a Bed in Minecraft
Updated April 2026 · 2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
Place 3 Wool of the same colour across the top row and 3 Wooden Planks (any type) across the middle row of a crafting table. Wool drops from sheep — kill or shear them. The bed lets you skip the night and set your spawn point. You need at least one before your first night if you want to avoid mobs.
How to Craft a Bed
1
Find sheep — they spawn in most grassy biomes. Kill them to get 1 Wool each, or use Shears to collect 1–3 Wool without killing them. You need 3 Wool of the same colour for the recipe.
2
Collect 3 Wooden Planks — craft from any log type. Oak, Spruce, Birch, and others all work. The plank type doesn’t affect the bed colour, only the Wool does.
3
Open your crafting table and place 3 Wool across the top row and 3 Planks across the middle row. Leave the bottom row empty. Collect the bed.
4
Place the bed on the ground and right-click to sleep — you can only sleep at night or during a thunderstorm. Sleeping skips to dawn and sets your spawn point at the bed’s location.
Tips
→
In multiplayer, all players must sleep at the same time to skip the night. One player sleeping alone does nothing in a server with multiple active players.
→
Never sleep in the Nether or the End — beds explode violently in both dimensions, dealing massive damage. Use them only in the Overworld.
→
You can breed sheep using Wheat to build a reliable wool supply. Keep a small pen of 4–6 sheep and shear them every few days for a steady source without hunting.
→
Beds can be dyed any of the 16 colours by crafting with dye + existing bed in a crafting grid. Useful for colour-coded rooms or multiplayer base organisation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you sleep in a bed in the Nether?
No — beds explode when used in the Nether or the End. They will deal significant damage to you and surrounding blocks. Only use beds in the Overworld.
What happens if my bed is destroyed?
If your bed is destroyed after you set your spawn point, you’ll respawn at the world spawn instead. Craft and place a new bed as soon as possible to reset your spawn point.
Do all wool colours work the same way?
Yes — colour is purely cosmetic. White, black, red, and any other colour of wool all produce a bed with identical functionality. The three wool pieces must be the same colour, but any colour works.
Can you sleep if there are mobs nearby?
No — if there are hostile mobs within a certain range of your bed, Minecraft will block the sleep attempt with a «You may not rest now, there are monsters nearby» message. Eliminate nearby threats first or move the bed further from them.
