How to Get the Bolt of Gransax in Elden Ring
Updated April 2026 · 3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
The Bolt of Gransax is on the giant spear embedded in the rooftop of Leyndell, Royal Capital — climb the spear itself to reach the weapon at its tip. You must collect it before burning the Erdtree — it becomes permanently inaccessible after that point in the story.
How to Get the Bolt of Gransax
1
Reach Leyndell, Royal Capital. Leyndell requires defeating at least two Shardbearers to access via the Erdtree barrier. Progress through Altus Plateau and enter the capital through the Draconic Tree Sentinel boss at the outer wall. Activate the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace inside the city — this is the best starting point for reaching the spear.
2
Navigate to the giant spear on the rooftops. From the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace, head up the stairs and onto the elevated rooftop area of the capital. Look for the enormous golden spear embedded diagonally into the rooftop — it is unmissable once you’re on the upper level, jutting out at a steep angle above the city.
3
Climb the spear. Drop down onto the base of the spear where it meets the rooftop, then run up the spear’s shaft toward its tip — it functions as a ramp. The spear is long enough that you can walk up it without jumping. The Bolt of Gransax sits on a corpse right at the tip of the spear at the top.
4
Collect it before burning the Erdtree. This is critical — after you burn the Erdtree during the story, Leyndell transforms into Leyndell, Ashen Capital and the rooftop area with the spear becomes inaccessible permanently. If you miss it, there is no way to get it in that playthrough. Collect it on your first visit to the capital.
Bolt of Gransax Tips
→
Requires 20 Strength and 40 Dexterity: the Bolt of Gransax is a somber weapon that scales primarily with Dexterity. It is an exceptional choice for Dex builds and Dex/Faith builds due to its high base damage and built-in lightning damage on its Ash of War.
→
Ancient Lightning Spear Ash of War: the Bolt of Gransax comes with the Ancient Lightning Spear Ash of War — it throws a massive lightning spear that tracks enemies at long range. This is one of the best ranged attacks in the game, dealing enormous lightning damage with excellent tracking that makes it viable even against fast-moving bosses.
→
Exceptional against the Elden Beast: the Elden Beast frequently swims away from melee range. The Ancient Lightning Spear Ash of War has enough range to hit it consistently from across the arena — making the Bolt of Gransax one of the most practical weapons for the final boss.
→
Upgrade to +10 immediately: the Bolt of Gransax is a somber weapon — it uses Somber Smithing Stones and caps at +10. Upgrade it to +10 as fast as possible since its Ash of War damage scales directly with the weapon’s upgrade level. At +10 with 40 Dex the Ancient Lightning Spear deals staggering damage.
→
It is permanently missable: unlike most items in Elden Ring, the Bolt of Gransax cannot be recovered after burning the Erdtree. If you are doing a completionist run, make collecting it one of your first priorities when entering Leyndell — before you even attempt Morgott.
FAQ
Can you miss the Bolt of Gransax permanently in Elden Ring?
Yes — the Bolt of Gransax is one of the few permanently missable items in Elden Ring. Always collect it before triggering that story event.

What stats do I need to use the Bolt of Gransax?
The Bolt of Gransax requires 20 Strength and 40 Dexterity to wield. It scales primarily with Dexterity and is classified as a somber weapon, meaning it upgrades with Somber Smithing Stones to a maximum of +10.
What does the Ancient Lightning Spear Ash of War do?
