⚡ Quick Answer

There are two ways to get to Altus Plateau in Elden Ring. The fastest route is the Grand Lift of Dectus in northeast Liurnia, which requires both halves of the Dectus Medallion. The alternative is the Ruin-Strewn Precipice, a dungeon route that takes you up to Altus Plateau without the medallion. Recommended level: 60–70.

Route A — Use the Grand Lift of Dectus
1 Collect the Left half of the Dectus Medallion from Fort Haight in southeast Limgrave — it’s in a chest at the top of the fort. Fort Haight is southeast of the Mistwood, past the Minor Erdtree.
2 Collect the Right half of the Dectus Medallion from Fort Faroth in Caelid — northeast of the Dragonbarrow, past the Minor Erdtree in that region. The chest is at the top of the fort. Caelid is dangerous — ride Torrent fast and skip fights to reach the chest.
3 Travel to the Grand Lift of Dectus in the far northeast of Liurnia, following the road north from Raya Lucaria. At the lift, use the «Hoist Medallion» prompt to combine both halves and activate it. The lift takes you directly up to Altus Plateau.
Route B — Reach Altus Plateau via Ruin-Strewn Precipice
4 From northern Liurnia, follow the river gorge northward into the Ravine-Veiled Village area. The entrance to the Ruin-Strewn Precipice mine dungeon is at the far end of the ravine — look for the mine entrance carved into the cliff face.
5 Navigate through the mine dungeon using the rope lifts to ascend. The dungeon is linear but contains Magma Wyrm enemies and falling hazards. Activate every Site of Grace inside — you’ll need them if you fall.
6 Defeat the Magma Wyrm Makar boss at the top of the dungeon to exit onto Altus Plateau. He is an optional fight but blocks the exit, so use a summon and target his head for bonus stagger damage. If you are running an Intelligence build, you may also want to check how to get the Moonveil Katana in Elden Ring, since another Magma Wyrm drops one of the best early INT weapons in the game. After the fight, a ladder leads directly up to the Plateau.
Tips Before Entering Altus Plateau
Route A is faster if you already have both medallion halves — the lift takes seconds and skips all combat. Route B is better if you want to avoid Caelid entirely on your first playthrough.
Both routes can be used in the same playthrough — take the Precipice first to reach Altus early, then collect the medallion halves later to unlock the lift as a fast travel shortcut between Liurnia and Altus.
Altus Plateau leads to Leyndell, the Royal Capital — the main story progression continues there with Morgott, the Omen King as the main boss. Be at least level 70–80 before attempting Leyndell.
The Erdtree’s Favor +1 talisman is found early in Altus Plateau near the Minor Erdtree — one of the best talismans in the game, boosting HP, Stamina, and Equip Load simultaneously.
Altus Plateau is a significant step up in difficulty from Liurnia — enemies hit harder and the region is larger and more complex. It also opens the path toward several major areas, including Mt. Gelmir, Volcano Manor, and eventually the road to Leyndell and the Mountaintops of the Giants. Exploring Altus thoroughly before pushing the main story is worth it for the extra levels, upgrade materials, and gear available throughout the region. More Elden Ring guides
