The Mountaintops of the Giants marks the start of Elden Ring’s final major stretch, and this route matters because it unlocks several late-game branches at once.
The main path begins with Morgott and the Rold Medallion, which is why this guide connects naturally with How to beat Morgott before the lift itself.
Once you arrive, the zone also opens the road toward the Fire Giant for story progression and toward the Haligtree route through the secret medallion path if you want the major optional late-game area.

Defeat Morgott, the Omen King in Leyndell, Royal Capital, then rest at the nearby Site of Grace to receive the Rold Medallion from Melina. Take it to the Grand Lift of Rold in northeast Leyndell and use the «Hoist Medallion» action to activate it. The lift carries you directly up to the Mountaintops of the Giants. Defeat Morgott, the Omen King in Leyndell. He is the mandatory boss of Leyndell, Royal Capital — found near the Erdtree after navigating the city. Defeating him is required to progress, and after the fight you receive access to the Rold Medallion from Melina at the nearby Site of Grace.

Collect the Rold Medallion. After defeating Morgott, rest at the Elden Throne Site of Grace and Melina gives you the medallion. Check your key items inventory to confirm you have it before leaving Leyndell.

Find the Grand Lift of Rold. From the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace in Leyndell, head east through the city toward the large gatehouse. Pass through the East Capital Rampart and continue east past the Forbidden Lands — a dark, fog-filled area with Black Blade Kindred enemies guarding the path. The lift is at the far end.

Activate the lift with the Rold Medallion. Stand on the lift platform and interact with it. Select «Hoist Medallion» from the prompt — not the regular activation option. The lift rises slowly through the clouds and deposits you at the base of the Mountaintops of the Giants. Activate the Site of Grace immediately.

Alternative: Secret Haligtree Medallion route. The Grand Lift of Rold also has a second activation using the Secret Medallion (Left + Right halves) which takes you to the Consecrated Snowfield instead — a hidden area leading to Miquella’s Haligtree. This requires finding both medallion halves hidden in Liurnia and the Mountaintops respectively.

The Forbidden Lands before the lift are dangerous — Black Blade Kindred enemies at the gatehouse hit extremely hard and are best avoided on Torrent. Ride past them at full speed rather than fighting — you only need to reach the lift.

Prepare for a significant difficulty jump — the Mountaintops is one of the hardest open-world areas in the game. Enemies deal heavy Frostbite buildup and the terrain is disorienting. Bring Preserving Boluses and have at least 50 Vigor before exploring.
