How to Get to the Underdark in Baldur’s Gate 3
Updated April 2026 · 2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
There are four main ways to get to the Underdark in Baldur’s Gate 3: the Whispering Depths under the Blighted Village, the Defiled Temple inside the Goblin Camp, the Zhentarim Hideout elevator at Waukeen’s Rest, and the Overgrown Tunnel beneath Auntie Ethel’s lair. The fastest early route is usually the Whispering Depths, but you should use Feather Fall before jumping into the chasm.
How to Get to the Underdark in BG3
1
Whispering Depths — Blighted Village well. Enter the well in the center of the Blighted Village and descend into the Phase Spider Matriarch lair. Navigate through the cave, cast Feather Fall, and jump down the large chasm near the spider nest to land in the Underdark. This is the fastest early entrance if your party can survive the spiders; if you are underleveled, check our BG3 leveling guide first.
2
Defiled Temple — Goblin Camp. Inside the Shattered Sanctum, go through Priestess Gut’s area and reach the Defiled Temple. Solve the moon disc puzzle or lockpick the hidden passage to access the staircase down to the Selûnite Outpost, which opens directly into the Underdark. This route is ideal if you are already clearing the Goblin Camp.
3
Overgrown Tunnel — Auntie Ethel’s lair. Go to the Riverside Teahouse in the Sunlit Wetlands and progress through Auntie Ethel’s hidden lair. In the Overgrown Tunnel, use the mushroom circle route to reach the Underdark. This entrance is more involved than the Blighted Village route, but it is useful if you are already doing the hag questline.
4
Zhentarim Hideout elevator. Find the Zhentarim Hideout at Waukeen’s Rest and gain access through dialogue, stealth, or combat. Inside, look for the hidden elevator behind the illusory wall/bookcase area. This route drops you close to the Underdark path toward Grymforge, which later connects naturally with getting to Moonrise Towers.
Tips
→
The Whispering Depths is the fastest route with no prerequisite quests — just enter the Blighted Village well and fight through the spider cave. If the Phase Spider Matriarch is giving you trouble, improve your party composition before forcing the route.
→
Bring Feather Fall or a scroll for the Whispering Depths drop — the chasm descent can kill your party without Feather Fall active. If you rely on spellcasters, a strong Sorcerer build makes this route safer and easier to prepare for.
→
The Underdark connects to Act 2 via the Grymforge boat — this is the alternative route to Moonrise Towers alongside the Mountain Pass. Before leaving Act 1, it is worth checking how BG3 act progression works so you do not rush past important quests.
→
Explore the Underdark thoroughly before moving to Act 2 — it contains the Adamantine Forge, Arcane Tower, Myconid Colony, and Grymforge, all of which have significant quests, loot, and XP worth collecting.
