How to Beat Commander O’Neil in Elden Ring
Commander O’Neil TipsCommander O’Neil is one of Caelid’s most important optional field bosses — not for his difficulty (he is manageable with proper positioning) but for the questline he unlocks. The Unalloyed Gold Needle is the key to Millicent’s story, which winds through some of Elden Ring’s most atmospheric late-game areas and culminates in one of the game’s most memorable questline endings. The fight itself rewards patience and close-range positioning — players who respect his summoning mechanic (ignoring the soldiers entirely) find the fight significantly easier than those who try to clear the adds before engaging O’Neil. At Level 55–65 with appropriate preparation for the Scarlet Rot environment, most players clear him in 3–5 attempts once they understand the summon mechanic and the Phase 2 rot explosion telegraph.FAQ
⚡ Quick Answer
How to Beat Commander O’NeilStay close and to his left side at all times — this avoids his sweep attacks and whip flail. When he calls his spectral soldiers, ignore them and immediately attack O’Neil — they disappear when he takes enough damage. Bring Preserving Boluses for the Scarlet Rot swamp arena. He drops the Unalloyed Gold Needle — essential for Millicent’s questline.
1
Find Commander O’Neil in the Swamp of Aeonia. Commander O’Neil is located in the Swamp of Aeonia — the central scarlet rot lake in Caelid. To reach him, enter Caelid from eastern Limgrave and navigate south through the rot swamp. His fog gate is in the centre of the swamp — look for the golden shimmering mist on an elevated dry platform surrounded by the rot lake. Activate the Inner Aeonia Site of Grace nearby before attempting the fight. Recommended Rune Level: 50–65 with a +8 or higher weapon.
2
Prepare for the Scarlet Rot arena — bring Preserving Boluses. The fight takes place on a platform partially surrounded by shallow scarlet rot water. While the main arena is elevated and mostly dry, movement during the fight may push you into the rot edges. Bring at least 5 Preserving Boluses (purchased from Gowry’s Shack in southern Caelid for 2,500 runes each, or crafted from Dewkissed Herba + Crystal Cave Moss + Sacramental Bud). O’Neil himself also inflicts Scarlet Rot buildup with some of his attacks — high Immunity stat or the Immunizing Horn Charm talisman helps.
3
Phase 1: stay close and attack after his flail combos. O’Neil fights with a whip-flail weapon and uses wide horizontal sweeps. His attacks have significant range — fighting at mid-range is the worst position. Stay close to his left side (your right) and dodge toward him through his swings. His standard combo ends with a forward slam — this is your punish window for 2–3 hits. Avoid standing directly in front where his wide sweeps connect most reliably. Do not roll backward — his whip has enough range to catch retreating dodges consistently.
4
Phase 1 summon: ignore the soldiers and attack O’Neil. O’Neil summons spectral soldiers periodically during Phase 1 — ghostly Cleanrot Knight-style fighters that surround and attack you. Do not fight the soldiers — they are near-immortal and will drain your time and Flasks. Instead, immediately sprint toward O’Neil and attack him aggressively. The soldiers vanish when O’Neil takes sufficient poise damage or after a short timer. Stay on O’Neil throughout the summon phase — this is actually your highest damage window since he is stationary during the summoning animation.
5
Phase 2 trigger: watch for the large rot AOE. At approximately 50% HP, O’Neil signals Phase 2 by raising his weapon and releasing a large Scarlet Rot explosion around himself — dodge away immediately when you see him plant his feet and charge. After the explosion he summons a second, larger group of soldiers and becomes more aggressive. Apply the same strategy: ignore soldiers, stay close to his left, and punish after his flail combos. Phase 2 soldiers include a stronger summoned knight — still avoid direct engagement and focus on O’Neil.
6
Collect the Unalloyed Gold Needle from his drop. O’Neil drops the Unalloyed Gold Needle — a key quest item for Millicent’s questline. Take the needle to Gowry’s Shack in southern Caelid and give it to Gowry — he will repair it and begin Millicent’s story, one of Elden Ring’s longest and most emotionally significant NPC questlines. Do not use or discard the Unalloyed Gold Needle before speaking to Gowry. He also drops a large quantity of Runes and the Commander’s Standard halberd.
→
Summon Spirit Ashes to distract the spectral soldiers: summoning a tanky Spirit Ash before the fight — the Mimic Tear or any high-HP summon — keeps O’Neil’s spectral soldiers occupied during both summon phases. With your Spirit Ash engaging the soldiers you can focus entirely on O’Neil without getting flanked. The Spirit Ash site of grace requirement is met at the Inner Aeonia area — you can summon freely in the O’Neil fight.
→
O’Neil is weak to Lightning and Holy damage: Commander O’Neil takes increased damage from Lightning and Holy damage types. Lightning-infused weapons or Holy-scaling weapons deal noticeably more per hit than standard physical damage. If you have access to Lightning Grease or a Lightning-infused weapon, apply it before the fight for 15–20% extra damage per hit — this meaningfully shortens the fight and reduces the number of summon phases you have to manage.
→
His rot AOE in Phase 2 has a tell — watch his feet: O’Neil’s Phase 2 Scarlet Rot explosion is telegraphed by him planting both feet wide and raising his weapon overhead with a pause. The moment you see this animation, stop attacking and sprint or dodge directly away from him — the explosion radius is large but has a half-second delay. Players who stay aggressive through the transition without watching for the tell consistently take the full explosion.
→
Fighting on horseback (Torrent) makes the fight trivial: O’Neil’s arena is large enough to use Torrent. Mounting up lets you close distance instantly after his summons, circle his flanks without getting caught by soldiers, and retreat from the Phase 2 rot explosion far more reliably than on foot. If you are struggling on foot, try the mounted approach — hit and run around his left side while avoiding soldiers entirely with Torrent’s superior mobility.

Commander O’Neil is required for Millicent’s questline: the Unalloyed Gold Needle he drops is the starting item for one of Elden Ring’s most important optional questlines. Millicent’s story spans Caelid, Altus Plateau, the Haligtree, and has two possible endings with significantly different item rewards. If you are following any NPC questline in Elden Ring, Millicent’s is among the most worthwhile — start it immediately by giving the needle to Gowry after defeating O’Neil.
Where is Commander O’Neil in Elden Ring?
Commander O’Neil is found in the Swamp of Aeonia in central Caelid — the large scarlet rot lake. His fog gate is on an elevated platform in the centre of the swamp. Activate the Inner Aeonia Site of Grace nearby before the fight. Reach Caelid by riding east from Limgrave past the Mistwood and navigate south through the rot swamp to the centre of the lake.
What does Commander O’Neil drop in Elden Ring?
Commander O’Neil drops the Unalloyed Gold Needle — a key quest item required for Millicent’s questline. Take it to Gowry’s Shack in southern Caelid to begin her story. He also drops the Commander’s Standard halberd and a large quantity of Runes. The Unalloyed Gold Needle should not be used or discarded before giving it to Gowry.
How do you deal with Commander O’Neil’s summoned soldiers?
Ignore the spectral soldiers entirely and attack Commander O’Neil directly. The soldiers are near-immortal and cannot be permanently killed — fighting them wastes time and Flask charges. Sprint past them to reach O’Neil and attack him aggressively during the summon phase. The soldiers disappear when O’Neil takes sufficient damage. Summoning a Spirit Ash before the fight helps keep the soldiers occupied so you can focus on O’Neil uninterrupted.
Is Commander O’Neil optional in Elden Ring?
Yes — Commander O’Neil is an optional field boss. He is not required to complete the main story. However, he is required to progress Millicent’s questline — one of Elden Ring’s most significant NPC questlines — since he drops the Unalloyed Gold Needle that starts her story. Players following NPC questlines should prioritise defeating him in Caelid.
