How to Beat Mohg, Lord of Blood in Elden Ring
Updated April 2026 · 3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer
Mohg’s biggest threat is his Nihil curse in Phase 2 — he casts it three times and each hit drains your HP. Counter it by using Purifying Crystal Tear in your Flask of Wondrous Physick before the fight, which completely nullifies the damage. Be level 100+, bring Bleed-resistant armour, and save your flasks for after the curse sequence. Phase 1 is aggressive melee — Phase 2 adds fire explosions around his wings.
How to Reach Mohg
1
There are two versions of Mohg. The main version (Lord of Blood) is in Mohgwyn Palace — reached via a teleporter in the Consecrated Snowfield (northwest, near the Yelough Anix Ruins) or through White-Faced Varre’s questline. The easier Mohg (Omen) is in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds under Leyndell.
2
Get the Purifying Crystal Tear before the fight — it’s dropped by the Bloodboon Nascent Butterfly NPC invader at the Church of the Dynasty in Mohgwyn Palace. This item is essential for surviving Phase 2 without burning all your flasks.
3
Mix the Purifying Crystal Tear into your Flask of Wondrous Physick at a Site of Grace. Drink the flask any time before or during Phase 2 — it doesn’t need to be at a specific moment, just before Nihil hits you.
Phase 1 — Fighting Mohg
1
Mohg opens with sweeping trident combos and blood explosions on the ground. Stay close to his left side (your right) — most of his swings go right. Punish after his 3-hit combo ends with a brief pause.
2
Watch for his blood rain dive attack — he flies up and plunges. Dodge toward him at the last moment, not away. Running away puts you directly in the blood puddles that follow.
3
When his health hits 50%, he enters Phase 2 and begins the Nihil sequence — three slow gestures. If you have the Purifying Crystal Tear active, take no damage. If not, heal through each hit and save flasks for after.
Phase 2 — Key Changes
→
Mohg gains fire explosions around his wings — attacks that previously had safe follow-up windows now have delayed fire bursts. Wait an extra beat before punishing his swings.
→
His Bloodboon Ritual (flies up, drops blood orbs) is identical to Phase 1 but with more fire. The same dodge timing works — roll toward him as he lands.
→
Bleed builds are highly effective against Mohg despite him being a blood-themed boss — he has normal bleed resistance. A Rivers of Blood Arcane build can stagger him repeatedly in both phases.
→
Mohg is optional but required if you want to access Miquella’s Haligtree via his arena, and his remembrance unlocks powerful weapons and incantations at Roundtable Hold.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Mohg required to finish Elden Ring?
No — Mohg, Lord of Blood is an optional boss. He is not part of the critical path to any ending. However, defeating him is required to access Miquella’s Haligtree via his arena portal.
What does Mohg drop?
Mohg drops the Remembrance of the Blood Lord (exchange at Roundtable Hold for the Mohgwyn’s Sacred Spear or Bloodboon incantation) and 420,000 Runes. He also unlocks access to the Haligtree zone through his boss room.
Where do I get the Purifying Crystal Tear?
It drops from the Bloodboon Nascent Butterfly, an NPC invader who appears at the base of the large staircase leading toward the Palace Approach Ledge-Road grace in Mohgwyn Palace. Defeat her before entering Mohg’s fog gate.
Can I summon a Spirit Ash against Mohg?
Yes — the Mimic Tear, Black Knife Tiche, or Lhutel the Headless all perform well in this fight. Tiche is particularly effective as she’s mobile enough to survive Phase 2’s fire explosions. Summon immediately on entering the fog gate.
